1253 Battle Group EIGHT Commander, Carrier W ' Rear dmiral Robert 1. Spane April 1991 to October 1992 Rear Admiral Robert 1. Spane assumed the duties of Commander Carrier Group EIGHT in April 1991 while the THEODORE ROOSE VELT Battle Group was Operating in the Red Sea. Admiral Spane was born in East Ely, Neva da. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Acade my in 1962 and was designated a Naval Avi ator in 1963. He is also a graduate of the Naval Post Graduate School and Nuclear Power School. Admiral Spane served as both the Ex- ecutive Officer and Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron THIR- TY-SEVEN, Command- ing Officer of USS TRIP- OLI ILPH 101, and both Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of USS ENTERPRISE QCVN 651. In addition, he has served in the following squadron assignments: Attack Squadron SIX- TY-SIX, USS ENTER- PRISE ICVN 651, USS AMERICA ICV 661, At- tack Squadron NINE- TY-FOUR, USS HAN- COCK ICVA 191g Attack Squadron EIGHTY- ONE, USS FORRESTAL ICV 5915 and Attack Squadron THIRTY- SEVEN, USS SARATO- GA ICV 601. During these assignments he USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT made over 1000 carrier landings. His shore and staff as- signments include Air Test and Evaluation Squadron FIVE, War at Sea Project Officerg Of- fice of the Secretary of Defense, TACAIR Proj- ect Officer, COMNAV- SURFPAC and COM- PHIBGRU EASTPAC, Staff, COMCRUDES- GRU ONE, Chief of Staff U.S. Pacific Com- mand, Chief, Current Operationsg and U.S. Atlantic Command, Di- rector for Operations. Admiral S ane has been awarded, the De- fense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star in lieu of second award, Air Medal with Silver Star and four Gold Stars in lieu of subsequent awards, Navy Com- mendation Medal with Combat V and two Gold Stars in lieu of sec- ond and third awards, 1oint Unit Commenda- tion Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, and various campaign ribbons. Admiral R. 1. Rocky S ane and his wife Lindla reside in Norfolk, Virginia. They have three children, Robert, Michele, and Jonathan.

Commander, Carrier Battle Group EIGHT Rear dmlral Ia L Iohnson A native of West Salem Wisconsin Rear Admiral Iohnson was commissioned on 5 Iune 1968 followin graduation from the Unite States Naval Academy He entered flight training at Pensacola Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator 1n October 1969 Following fleet replace ment training 1n the F81 Crusader at VF-124 NAS Miramar Rear Admiral Iohnson reported to VF-191 where he made two combat cruises on board USS ORIS KANY CVA 341 . In Iu y 1973 he reported to the Bureau of Naval Per- sonnel where he served as an AVIHIIOH 1un1or Officer Detailer unt1l December 1975 This was followed by enrollment at the Armed Forces Staff College where he graduated 1n1une 1976 Returning to VF-124 Rear Admiral 1ohnson under- went training in the F -14A Tomcat. His subsequent as- signment to VF-142 in May 1977 included Mediterra- nean deployments aboard USS AMERICA ICV 661 and USS DWIGHT D. EISEN- A1r Wing ONE this time as a Senior Carrier Air Wing Commander During this tour Carrier Air Wing ONE embarked in USS AMERI- CA KCV 661 for Norwegian Sea operations and a Med- iterraneanflndian Ocean deployment He was re- lieved in Iuly 1989 and sub- sequently reported to the Naval War College as a member of the CNO s Stra- tegic Studies Grou Rear Admiral 10 nson re- ported for duty 1n1une 1990 as the Dlrector Distribution Department Naval M1l1tary Personnel Command and served as Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel for Distri- bution 1n the Bureau of Na- val Personnel In October 1992 Rear Ad- miral Iohnson re orted for duty as Comman er Carrier Group EIGHT Rear Admiral Iohnsons decorations include the Le- gion of Merit IZ1, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal 181, Navy Com- mendation Medal and other service X campai n awards. From Iuly 1980 to Ian- uary 1983, he served as Ex- ecutive Officer and Com- manding Officer of VF-84, embarked in USS NIMITZ ICVN 681. Rear Admiral Iohnson next reported to the Naval Military Personnel Com- mand where he served as Head, Aviation Iunior Offi- cer Assignment Branch un- til September 1984. In March 1985, he assumed command of Carrier Air Wing ONE. During this tour, Air Wing ONE embarked in USS AMERICA ICV 661 for Norwegian Sea and Medi- USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT terranean operations. U or relinquishing commandp in Iuly 1986, Rear Admiral Iohnson reported to Com- mander Sixth Fleet where he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations until Iune 1987. In February 1988, Rear Admiral Iohnson again as- sumed command of Carrier mer Garland Hawthorne of Colorado Springs, Colorado. They reside in Norfolk, Vir- ginia, with their daughter, Cullen, a graduate of Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia.
