USS MONTEREY ICG-612 is the fifteenth Aegis Cruiser to join the fleet and represents the epitome of our nations commitment to sea power Comprised ofthe most sophisticated and effective air: surface and subsurface defense systems in the world, MONTEREY was commis- sioned on 16 June 1990. he shipis name, MONTEREX commemorates the battle of Monterey fought 20-24 September 1846 in the war with Mexico and also the heritage of previous Navy ships bearing this proud name. On 20 Septemben Major General Zachary Taylor with a force of 6,625 men stormed the heavily defended city. General Ampudia and his garrison of 10,000 surrendered on the morning of 24 September: Taylor would become President in 1848. Those who fought with him at Monterey include: Lt. Ulysses S. Grant, commander of Union forces during the Civil War at Shiloh, Wcksburg, and Appomatox and President in 18685 Col. Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America: Brig. Gen. James Henderson, first Governor of Texas, Brig. Gen. John Quitman, Governor of Missis- sippi,' Col. William Worth, namesake of Fort Worth, Texasg Lt. George Meade, commander of the Union forces at Gettysburg: Lt. Fighting Joe Hooken commander ofthe Union forces at Chancellorsville: Lt. George Thomas, the Rock of Chickamauga Lt. John Pemberton, command- er of the Coryfederate forces at Wcksburgg Lt. James Longstreet, commander of C orjederate wings under Lee at Antietam and Getrvsburgg Lt. John Reynolds, killed lead- ing a Union wing at Gettysburg, and Capt.
