Unfamiliar with the city, the tour guide described Ancona as an industrial, unattractive P gvetj have an interesting, though small and semi-aban- ort town in the region ofthe Marches that does. how- doned historical center With this inauspicious report. we were happily surprised with the quality of this Ital- ian city located on the eastern coast just south of Ye- nige, The middle ofthe streets became filled in the eve nings with strolling residents who welcomed us warmly With two cathedrals, a Romanesque World Har l monu ment, and an abundance of ice cream shops and side- walk cfafes, crewmembers had an enjoyable visit to An- cona, I Icll y.
