aving passed the New Year and departed France, the end of the cruise finally seemed at hand. We sailed back for our final Plane Guard operations in the Adriatic accompanied by USS AMERICA and then began our journey hgme- ward. Our final port visit in Spain seemed only to be one more task that we must persevere. However, our stay in Malaga, January 20-26, became one of the highlights of our cruise. Wide, tree-lined boulevards, ornate Spanish architecture, and a fineh, groomed botanical garden make the city aesthically striking. Winding castillo wang tower above the city, while expansive beaches border the azure waters of the western Mediterranean along the Costa Del Sol. Birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the city also was remarkable for its bullfighting arena, Cervantes opera and theater house, abundant shops and malls, and bustling crowds. A bus continually transported crewmembers twenty miles west of Malaga to the summer beach resort of Torremolinos. With our return to Spain our port visits had come full circle, having begun the cruise on the Spanish island of Mallorca. Shortly after departing Malaga, we turned over with the SARATOGA Battlegroup, transited the Straits of Gibraltar, and said goodbye to the Mediterranean Sea. 41. I 1 K x zu s 5 K.
