General Zachary Taylor. with a force of ti, 025 men, arrived at Monterey. The city W CA sprawled before Taylor presented a formidable aspect to the would-be conqueror. Monterey 's southern and eastern limits rested on the Santa t'atarina River. relatively safe from assault. Southwest andjust across the river from Nueva Le0ntS eupltal stood Federation lllll. from which a single-gun rcdoubt and Fort El Soldado commanded the city. The battle lasted until 23 Spctember, with the Mexican forces contesting CVUP' foot of ground until only the fitadel remained in their posscsion.
