General Zachary Taylor. with a force of ti, 025 men, arrived at Monterey. The city W CA sprawled before Taylor presented a formidable aspect to the would-be conqueror. Monterey 's southern and eastern limits rested on the Santa t'atarina River. relatively safe from assault. Southwest andjust across the river from Nueva Le0ntS eupltal stood Federation lllll. from which a single-gun rcdoubt and Fort El Soldado commanded the city.
