m fat New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine College of Medicine and Dentistry Of New Jersey 1981 Volume 1 n the beginning There was a school without walls . . . and without halls . . . and without students or books or professors . . . and without any of the essentials necessary for the delivery of high quality medical education . . . There was only an idea . . . And for eons this idea dwelled in the minds of Osteopathic Physicians throughout the state. 70 71 72 73 74 75 76 . . . years passed. Howard Levine, D.O. And then, after much deliberation, the state of New Jersey was ready to establish its third school of medicine . . . Magically the word came down from above into the mind of Stanley, Lord of the Medical Province. With great power and wisdom, Stanley set the stage for the creation. Stanley Bergen, M.D. President It was the fall of 1977 . . . Benjamin Cohen, D.O. tP V Dean And Stanley planted the word in the mind of Ben, when he had chosen above all others. Go forth Ben, and spread the word of Osteopathic medicine throughout the state . . . You shall carry the banner of the college of the Southlands and beyond. Assemble for me a strong and loyal faculty as well as a hearty student body and you and yours shall surely flourish. And Ben went forth in the State Chariot with his chariot driver and his shapely secretary. To accomplish the task of creation . . . who would carry out his work while he and Stanley settled the particulars of the creation back in the Holy city of Newark. And as Robert and Richard steadfastly es- tablished a niche in the school ' s temporary lodging, Gerry gained a foothold in the Southlands where he proceeded to procure the necessary clinical affiliations for the new school. Harry Bonier, D.O. The Founding Ladies — D. Kelchner, Agn McGinnis, M. Coolen Larry Nogle . . . Then Robert and Richard con- sorted with the financers and began the search. And with much delibera- tion and scrutiny, they began to begat . . . And they begat . . . CMDNJ meets JFK Robert Pearson D.O. Eleanor Masterson D.O. Melvyn Lynn, Ph.D., (Microbiology) Leon Dickson, Ph.D., Biochemistry Tobias Majica-a, Ph.D., Microbiology S. Penningroth, Ph.D. Pharmacology While in the south . . . Gerry had not such a difficult time of things, for he was wise and more knowledgeable of the domestic talents the New Jersey Southlands had to offer. Working with Harry, elder statesman of Stratford, and Augie, administrator ex- traordinaire a teaching affiliation was smoothly procured. Gerry, next set out to solicit a clinical faculty to teach his students. This of course was a simple task for many of those in attendance were of his own seed; created in his own image. And he too began to begat . . . and he begat Charles Kasterberg, D.O. George Chatyrka, D.O. Robert Maurer, D.O. Jeanne Steiner, D.O. 13 Daniel Belsky, D.O. (Chairman) Gary Packin, D.O. And together they struggled, they fought and they debated, tormenting themselves and each other. They tortured many young students from college and beyond . . . And for six months they met and they argued, and they queried as they grew weary of their task. But soon their monumental task was accomplished. From a field of thousands they chose 24 of their liking . . . They charged these one score and four with a heavy burden of responsibility for they were to be the charter class and the first to graduate from the new school. And with but minor changes in the lineup, the task was done. Through grueling studies, through long days, and sometimes longer nights, through battles both lost and won, 24 stood the test of time to become the Class of 1981 of the CMDNJ- NJSOM. And there was evening, and there was morning STUDENTS . 4 The First Class . . . Geniuses Joseph Bottalico July 23, 1954 Cherry Hill, N.J.
