FOURTH ROW Iohcmsen, Spare. Curtis Seager, Maxwell. The freshmen entering the Dental College of the Uni- versity ot California Medical Center in September, 1953, were, on the average, a little younger than groups of recent previous years. The list, however, still contained ex-servicemen, ex-teachers and a few intrepid souls who must strongly believe the saying Life begins at 4U. After a few weeks of becoming oriented to these new surroundings the class attended the Fall Dental Picnic and won honors by beating all opposition in baseball. At this writing they are wishing they had saved their energy for second semester Prosthesis Lab. The class has benefited by the wonderful tradition here of the advanced students lending a welcoming and helpful hand to the newcomer. Let's work together and see our 59 graduate together. reflymvm Den ml Clam FIRST HOW. left to right: Dugger, Tukeman, Kurtzman. Smith. Ccxlderone, Dougherty. Dentistry, to our surprise, proved to be a tough business, but what Will undoubtedly be remembered was the panic to make the numerous dead- lines in Crown and Bridge Prosthesis, Operative Den- as enjoyable work tistry and Denture Prosthesis. lt W though, and We were exceedingly happy to survive the year with nothing more serious than l comp ete physical exhaustion. Socially, our class activities were severely curtailed by the pressure of work and only two class functions were held. First, there was a Texas Stomp, capably ar- ranged by Tex Soldevila, which was complete with a square dance caller, and local atmosphere in the presence of Hondo Sullivan. At the close of the Fall semester We tested our dexterity by using chopsticks at a unique dinner party in Chinatown. The class is in- debted to Herb Chow for managing and being host at this successful event which We hope to see repeated. FIRST ROW, left to right: Bleier, Davis, Owens, Per- kins, Ures. Ashby. Mary Fong, secretary-treasurer: Gwen Shepherd. vice-president: Carolyn Hardin, president. fr Dental ilzbzgzknirtr Sixteen girls from various California univer- sities and junior colleges enrolled in dental hy- giene in September forming one of the largest classes UC had ever had. On their first day in clinic, the luniors wore their new nylon uni- forms, a change from the traditional blue cotton. Having clinic patients, carving clay teeth, and studying were, however, not the only activities during the day. A great deal of fun was also had in the Co-op before it burned and the carn- pus was soon to realize that a few dental hygienists could very often be seen playing cards and drinking coffee between classes. The 16 also had fun on various class activities, including bicycle trips, Italian and Chinese din- ners, dances, picnics, and Dental Health Ed field trips. erq onq, a vies, Garter, Shepherd, Dalrymple FIRST ROW, left to right: Hardin, Tomalino, Burke, Karr, Pickard, B , F Ott.
