HERBERT G. I OHNSTONE Dean oi Students mia and the Medical Center As the final semester draws to a close for those who are leaving the San Fran- cisco campus to start on their professional careers or continue with advanced work in their chosen specialties, it is with some reluctance that farewells have to be said. In all probability reflection at this time may find midterms, finals, long hours of study, schedules to follow and deadlines to meet, ever present in ones thoughts. Nevertheless absence of a few months will serve to replace these thoughts with memories not only of the many aspects associated with the acqui- sition of a formal education but of the friends which were made, of the work accomplished in group activities, of the friendly advice of an instructor and of the many events happening and incidents associated with campus life. As the years go by it will become increasingly evident that many forces, some tangible, others not so tangible, played a most important role not only in preparing you for your profession but provided a firm basis on which to meet the social and economic impacts of our present existence. ' Herbert G. Iohnstone

ROBERT GORDON SPHOUL President of the University . . . of the U11tZ.V6V!Z'f of Cozlqfor It is not strange at all that the University of California and its sister universities and colleges throughout the tree World attach great importance to tradition and to the ceremonies and observ- ances surrounding it. A university, any university, is not merely an architectural setting of stately buildings and beautiful grounds in and about which young people gather before they take up their tasks of the long years. On the contrary, it is the laboratory ot a Way of lite which is becoming more and more critically impor- tant as bigger and better dictatorial schemes are evolved to des- troy it. Whether your home campus is Berkeley, Davis, La Iolla, Los Angeles, Mount Hamilton, Riverside, San Francisco, or Santa Bar- bara, you share with thousands before you one alma mater, the University of California, and thus you share the proud traditions its sons and daughters have helped evolve and promulgate. Robert G. Sproul

E6l1fl.f0 DEAN SMYTH School oi Medicine Medicine To the graduating classes ot our professional schools ot the San Francisco Medical Center- congratulations and best wishes for a successful professional career. Few times has our country been so concerned with health in its many as- pects. The need tor the professional help you can give is great-yours is a golden opportunity. Wherever you go, wherever you find your inter- est and service I hope you will remember the Alma Mater With the loyal devotion ot true alumni. Francis S. Smyth DEAN FLEMING College of Dentistry xr entirtry The first Increment ot the Medical Sciences Building and the expansive Moifitt Hospital will be completed in 1953-54. These huge structures of steel and cement surely have a different meaning for different people. To some, the build- ings represent a thing which has been accom- plished. To others, the buildings represent only one step in the attainment ot a goal, the first step ot many yet to come. To still others-partie ularly to the Medical Center students-the build- ings, symbolize the beginning ot their career in the Health Sciences. Regardless of what the buildings mean to each of us, We should remember that the buildings themselves are not as important as the men and Women in them. Ot the men and women, the im- portant thing is not their number, but the kind ot people they are. And in the Health Sciences, most important are those who are kind in spirit, for kindliness is the priceless ingredient in all prescriptions. Willard C. Fleming
