STANLEY LAWRENCE Editor-in'Cl1ief O 0 0 For many years the question of unifying the four centers of professional learning here at the Medical Center has presented a problem of the greatest magnitude. Actually, there is no valid reason for the existence of such strict lines of demarcation in a campus dedicated entirely to the benefit of mankind. With the problem of unification before them, the Staff of the 1940 MEDICAL CENTER, spurred on- ward by the support of the California Club, has succeeded in giving to the students a record of their college life. lt was felt that an enthusiastically supported yearbook would do more to produce a sincere spirit of unity and understanding between the four schools and colleges than any other form fcfzicwml Siafff lOl-IN GRIFFITH Business Manager liillElDDllCCAlL, of extra-curricular activity. The 1940 MEDICAL CENTER, by representing the four schools equally, has become a responsibility to which each has contributed more than its full measure of support. The finding of sufficient available time for the solicitation of advertising space and the collection of material for the book has presented a rather dif- ficult situation for the Staff to overcome. Many im- provements could probably have been made in the layout or contents of the publication, but under the circumstances the Staff feels proud of the re- sults of its work. The response to the plea for sup- port has been nothing short of amazing, and it is hoped that the confidence and good wishes given to the project during the past year have been justified. It is composed of three members from each of the four schools at the Medical Center and Hastings College of Lawy fifteen representatives in all. A successful dance sponsored by the Cali- fornia Club was held in the fall semester at the Fairmont Hotel, and was attended by stu- dents from all of the San Francisco Campuses. The activities of the Club have done much to erase long-standing misconceptions which have existed between the various Schools. The most ambitious project to emerge from the organization is the 1940 MEDICAL CEN- TER. The California Club hopes that this volume accomplishes its purpose and sets a precedent for the succeeding classes to follow. 1 I V 9 ., Q, A .I WXUA, Q. -yi 1. II'-, ' 9- JL: 1-rl: '. t M WILLIAM GRIFFITI-I Photography ENTER There can be no doubt but that the Staff owes a great debt to Dr. Fritz Schubert, of the College of Dentistry, for the invaluable assistance he rendered at a time when the success or failure of the 1940 MEDICAL CENTER hung in the balance. Its in- debtedness to him is something that cannot be overlooked in any way, and it is hoped that the success of this volume will give him the same feeling of satisfaction it has given those who have worked to publish it. Acknowledgement is due Mrs. Catherine Brown, of the College of Pharmacy, for the aid she has so unselfishly given. Dr. George Steninger, of the College of Den- tistry, who has guided us financially, must also be presented with our thanks for his efforts in our behalf. SW lUNE EMERSON Circulation Manager 0 O Mr. Richard Benson, of the Photo-Art Engraving Co., who has provided the design and layout for the book, and who has gone out of his way to help the Staff on innumerable occasions, receives our thanks for all he has done. Mr. A. K. Anderson, of the Osborne Printing Co., should be complimented for the excellent work he has done, and has our heartiest thanks. It is the sincere hope of the graduating members of the Staff of the l94O MEDICAL CENTER that a precedent has been established which will be car- ried on by succeeding classes. If a step toward the unification of the Medical Center Campus has been accomplished, they feel that in one way they have achieved something of lasting benefit, not only to themselves, but to the University of Cali fornia as a whole. sw 'rt Ill' Left to rightvTop Row: M.
