Iames F. Rinehart, M.D.. is a graduate of the University of California Medical School in 1927, and now holds the posi- tion of Associate Professor of Pathology and Medicine in the Medical School and Visiting Pathologist at the University Hospital. Except for a short period, l93U- l93l, when he was a Littauer Research Fellow, Harvard Cancer Commission, at the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory in Boston, Massachusetts, he has been af- filiated with the Medical Shcool as pathologist, teacher and research inves- tigator. His research has had to do with leukemias, lymphosarcomas and allied conditions: and during the past few years with rheumatic fever and rheuma- toid arthritis. He is well known for his work with vitamin C and its effect in certain rheumatic diseases. Doctor Ernest Linwood Walker: Pro- fessor of Tropical Medicine in the Hooper Foundation since 1914, received his degrees from Harvard University. Scientific investigations were conducted by him at Harvard, in the Philippines and in South America. Among his Con- tributions to science have been studies in amoebic dysentery, malarial trans- mission, chemotherapy of bacterial in- fections, etiology and endemiology of leprosy, chemotherapeutics of chaul- moogra oil, and he is now investigating the field of malignant neoplasms, wt it .. A Carl L. A. Schmidt. Ph.D., Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Chairman of the Division of Biochemistry, is a grad- uate of the University of California and has served on its faculty since l915. Dr. Schmidt is well recognized for his studies in the amino acids, proteins, bile function and the fat soluble vitamins. M.D. Since 1929, Doctor Natiziger has been Professor of Surgery, Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in Chief to the University of California Hos- pital. Additional appointments are, Con- sulting Surgeon to the San Francisco Hospital, Letterman General Hospital and United States Veterans' Facility. Doctor Naifziger's especial interests lie in two fields: Neurological Surgery and Medical Education. Among his numerous contributions to Neurological Surgery are, the development of knowledge of the anatomy of the ventricular and sub- arachnoid systems ot the brain in man, recognition of the diagnostic value of the pineal shift in intracranial disorders, the diagnosis of the scalenus anticus syndrome, studies on malignant exoph- thalmos and the development of oper- ative relief for this condition, as Well as the introduction ot various new technical methods. Doctor Naffziger's efforts for the improvement of medical education, and particularly for the provision of op- portunities for the adequate training of surgeons, have received national recog- nition. gint-0. Charles L. Conner, M.D., Professor and Head of the Division of Pathology in the Medical School and Pathologist to the University Hospital since 1928. After graduating from Baylor, M.D., 1920, he received a National Research Council Fellowship and was appointed Research Fellow in Pathology at Harvard Medical School, and later Faculty Instructor. Dur- ing an interval year he was Associate in Pathology at McGill and Director of Laboratories at the Montreal General Hospital. Since graduation has been a pathologist, teacher and investigator, His research has had to do with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: the nature of natural and pathologic pigments in the body: malignant tumors, particularly bone tumors: miscellaneous problems in pathology and physiology: and more recently with cirrhosis of the liver, Has been for several years Pacific Coast representative ot the Medical Fellowship Board of the National Research Council, and is Chairman of the Research Com- mittee of the Medical School and ot the Cancer Committee. Dr. Iohn Albert Marshall is probably the only faculty member of the College of Dentistry who could discuss either dynamite or dentistry with equal facility. He holds four degrees from the Univer- sity of California, and in addition he has studied chemistry at the University of Berlin and also at Charlottenburg. He started his career as a chemist with E. l. DuPont de Nemours, specializ- ing in explosives. Since 1929, Dr. Marshall has been Professor of 'Biochemistry and Dental Pathology at the College of Dentistry, His studies of the diseases of the teeth have made him internationally famous. His textbook on the diseases of the teeth, which is used by the Iunior and Senior students in their study of Dental Pathology, he has facetiously re- ferred to as the gospel, according to St. lohn . His latest work, summarizing and bringing up to date the literature concerning dental caries, published in the Psysiological Review for Iuly, 1939, has gained new distinction for him. l 1
