S E N I O Rof theY If a student were searching for Mindelyn Buford, II on campus, chances are, he would find her on the Hill. While many freshmen could not wait to leave the dorms, Buford has made a difference in the lives of on-campus residents for the last four years. During her first year in Rieber Hall, Buford jumped into floor government, but found that this was not enough involvement. A job with the Office of Residential Life quickly followed, and after four years, there is almost no position that she cannot claim having held. Buford has not only been a Program Assistant and Resident Assistant, but also a summer Resident Assistant and House Coordinator for the transfer students at the Hilgard House. One of Buford ' s favorite programs for students has b een her New Roomate Game, a quiz show for new residents modeled after the Newlywed Game. Mindelyn has also designed educational and career-focused programs. Although these positions have all been jobs, for Buford they are more. These positions give her the opportunity to reach out to students and make a difference in their lives. Each time she reached out, she hoped her contact made a positive impact. As Buford said, The sphere of influence is continuously fueled by one person ' s contact with the next and I am happy to contribute to this phenomenon. Beyond the Hill, Buford has found her lifelong calling through research in her Sociology major. Although many students never take learning beyond the classroom, Buford has never let herself be confined by four walls. The culmination of her research resulted in a senior thesis entitled The Black Male Experience at UCLA. In her project, she analyzed a variety of experiences of African-American undergraduate men in settings ranging from the residence halls to the classroom. For many students, just getting through college is a challenge. Yet, for Buford, her tirst important decision came when she switched her major from economics to sociology. Professor Jill Stein was a major force in her transformation. Stein encouraged Buford to apply for a summer program with the National Science Foundation. After spending a summer studying the homeless in Los Angeles, Buford never strayed far from research. Sociology is perfect because in general, I am a person who loves to observe the world, said Buford. Her major lets her not only observe the world, but also report on it in hopes of change. Following her final year as a coordinator at the Hilgard House and the culmination of months of research, Mindelyn will graduate from UCLA and move onto a Ph.D. program at Johns Hopkins University. Although her years as a RA will be coming to a close, her future holds many options in store.
