Senior Spotlight Adam Ross Sociology took for granted the guys in the frater- nity would discriminate against me be- cause of my sexual orientation. I was wrong. The guys looked at me in the same light as any other rushee. When I came to UCLA I saw the need for gay and lesbian awareness and education. Now that I am graduating I look back at my years, and I am proud of the contributions I have made in these areas. I believe that these contributions have affected change in the campus community. I believe that I have instigated integration of the heterosexual and homosexual communities through the Gay And Lesbian Association (GALA), Ten Percent (the gay, lesbian and bisexual newsmagazine). As Co-Chair for Gala I founded the gay men ' s fraternity. Lambda Delta Phi. The fraternity only lasted a couple of years because we saw its creation as a mechanism rather than a permanent structure. I believe that the formation of the fraternity has served its purpose: integration of gay men into the already existing Greek system. Segragation does not have any benefits. I couldn ' t stop with GALA because believe that if it isn ' t written, it didn ' t happen. So I took on the challenge of Editor-in-Chief of Ten Percent. Ten Percent was probably my favorite activity on campus because I felt I was impacting the most people possible which is always my goal. If you are not reaching people you might as well not be doing it. In retrospect, I have realized that when I entered a situation at UCLA I assumed that heterosexual people were prejudice against my way of life. For example, the biggest handicap I faced rushing a Greek fraternity was self-imposed. I took for granted the guys in the fraternity would discriminate against me because of my sexual orientation. I was wrong. The guys looked at me in the same light as any other rushee. This experience convinced me that Lambda Delta Phi was no longer needed and that maybe the campus climate was changing through all of our efforts. When I benefit other people I am satisfied with myself. I truly feel I have made a difference at UCLA through everything I have outside of the classroom, instead of limiting myself to classroom potential. Anna M. Park S BSPsy( hology Bonnie C.
