My involvement in various activi- ties gave me the opportunity to learn about my culture, history, and the plight of my community. I will always remember UCLA as the place which prepared me to tackle any obstacle that I may face. Since UCLA is representative of the larger society, I realized that I couldn ' t keep my involvements isolated. Therefore, I extended my involvement from tutoring high school students in gangs from inner city LA, to working with Samahang Filipino, to writing for Pacific Ties, to holding the Executive Vice President office in USAC. The reason behind my strength, and ultimately my motivation, is my background. My involvement in various activities gave me the opportunity to learn about my culture, history, and the plight of my community. I was able to maintain a perspective on who I am and what I ' m working for. Project Pilipino Recruitment and Enrichment Program (PREP) and Samahang Pilipino taught me the most. For example, PREP gave me the chance to give back to kids what I didn ' t have. I was a real role model. If it were not for things that I learned and the kind of support I received from these organizations, I know I could not have made it as far as I did. Particularly in USAC with its over 70 years history with only one Asian as President, I was quite proud as a woman and Pilipino to represent my community as the second highest office for UCLA student programming. However, prior to USAC my activities were geared towards the Asian Pacific Coalition. As a result both USAC and APC thought that I would have a hard time finding an equal balance in representing the two. But, my main goal was to diversify USAC not only in composition but also in terms of views. I ' m proud of what I ' ve contributed to this school, but we still have a long way to go. I ' d like to see the climate of the community change into a more culturally and academically enlightening curriculum. I feel that people should experience as much as they can here at UCLA. The most important lessons are learned outside of the classroom. Takako Nagumo BA English Nayiri K. Nahabedian BA Psychology Haleh C. Naimi BA Economics Gay M.
