fall Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden appeared in a political stance; both emphasized their group, Campaign for Economic Democracy . Although student reaction was mixed, both Fonda and Hayden were receptive to questions from the crowd. . . . Seawind, a New Wave phenomenon, eased into a progressive sound which lulled their audience and soothed the soul. . . . Penny Marshall, in her first speaking appearance ever, claimed that her best moments were those of sheer nervousness . Before fielding questions from the crowd, she showed a film of outtakes from Laverne Shirley. Campus Events brought us a flood of New Wave groups in the fall quarter, due to rising popularity. fall Two major events reflected the end of the decade...the Iranian Crisis and the Anti-Nuclear Movement. . . . After finding political asylum in the United States, the Shah of Iran was replaced by religious and political figure Ahyatolla Khomeni. Shortly thereafter, students stormed the American embassy in Tehran, capturing civil and military hostages. Riots ensued over both sides of the world demanding release of both the Shah and the hostages to their homelands. . . . The nuclear controversy, spurred by the leakage at Three Mile Island, was brought close to home when the campus began questioning the safety of the nuclear reactor in Boelter Hall. Currently, the reactor is still in operation; although anti-nuke organizations are seeking its demise. . . . Students seeking low-budget ways to get around town faced yet another hike in gasoline prices, this time it reached $1.00 per gallon; and California is still on the odd even plan.
