GOLDEN YEAR 1979 fall Since the ceremony in 1979 at which the Golden Year flag was first raised at the West Center, a number of special events took place, saluting UCLA (1929-1979). On September 28, an invitational dinner and reception, hosted by the Golden Year Committee, honored UCLA dignitaries such as Bill Ackerman. Later that evening, students, alumni and friends gathered on Royce Quad to watch a spectacular fireworks display. Other commemorative events included several special at Royce Hall, the first of which featured Carlo Maria Giulini and the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the same program as Otto Klemperer conducted in 1936 during the first professional concert season here.

fall Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden appeared in a political stance; both emphasized their group, Campaign for Economic Democracy . Although student reaction was mixed, both Fonda and Hayden were receptive to questions from the crowd. . . . Seawind, a New Wave phenomenon, eased into a progressive sound which lulled their audience and soothed the soul. . . . Penny Marshall, in her first speaking appearance ever, claimed that her best moments were those of sheer nervousness . Before fielding questions from the crowd, she showed a film of outtakes from Laverne Shirley. Campus Events brought us a flood of New Wave groups in the fall quarter, due to rising popularity.
