Dedication: JD Morgan After seventeen years as UCLA Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, J.D. Morgan officially retires this June. J.D. has made the UCLA athletic program what it is today, Chancellor Charles Young said, adding, the record of thirty NCAA Championships won by UCLA teams during his directorship — the most of any University in the country during his tenure — is just one example of the quality of J.D. ' s leadership. Since his 1963 appointment, Morgan was actively involved with various UCLA building projects including Pauley Pavilion athletic department building which were opened in 1965, the new Marina Del Rey Boat House and Spaulding football practice field (1966), and Drake Track and Field Stadium, constructed in 1969. Morgan has had a long history at UCLA, beginning in the late 30 ' s when he was an undergraduate and a four-year letterma in tennis. He later attended the UCLA School of Business Administration prior to serving as a commander in the U.S. Navy. Morgan then assumed an accounting position with the Associated Students organization at the same time as he became assistant tennis coach under William C. Ackerman. Following Ackerman ' s 1949 retirement, Morgan took the head coaching job, going on to coach seven NCAA Championship teams. In 1963, Morgan was selected as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on the basis of his combination of business and athletic coaching backgrounds. Morgan has received both local and national accolades and has served on several prestigious sports committees. He currently is a member of the NCAA Executive Committee and the National Football Hall of Fame ' s Honor Court. Morgan will continue his association with UCLA, as he will become special consultant to the Chancellor and to Vice Chancellor Elwin V. Svenson under whose jurisdiction the intercollegiate and recreational programs operate.

. . . Byron Atkinson Dean Byron Atkinson is retiring from the UCLA ranks after thirty-seven years of administrative work. Atkinson worked his way up from Assistant to the Dean of Undergraduates to the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. In his years a t UCLA, Atkinson accomplished a great deal in the student affairs area, including reenstating such campus traditions as Homecoming and University Sing. He was also instrumental in developing the Special Services (for handicapped, veterans, etc.) and Orientation (for new students) programs. Atkinson ' s service to the UCLA camp us and community was cited when he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Alumni Association in 1971. That for which the dean is best known is his understanding and fairness. Respected by faculty and students alike, everyone always seems comfortable speaking with him. Chancellor Young summarizes this feeling well when he contends that Atkinson is more than an able administrator. He is a loyal, compassionate person who has positively influenced the lives of untold thousands. UCLA is indeed fortunate to have him these thirty-seven years. To countless past students, all of whom continue to consider him a friend, he is ' Mr. UCLA. '
