The journalist exaggerated a bit, but where else can you enjoy the beach and hit the surf in December? In the casually sophisticated culture of Southern California today, there are the performing and visual arts, rollerskating, frozen yogurt and salad bars, the ocean, and the movie industry. And even though we know that running into a movie star in the true city of Hollywood is almost as likely as locating one in Nilwaukee, the rest of the country dosen’t have to know that. Capping off the Bruin experience is UCLA’s own intimate college town. A short walk into Westwood Village, amid the continually changing setting of neon lights, can offer the student a cosmopolitan taste of fashionable culture. One may decide to dine in one of Westwood’s elegant restaurants such as La Fondue Bourguignonne, Di Stefano’s or Fatburger. One may prefer to stop at some of village’s distinctive entertainment spots, including the Westwood Playhouse, several classy movie theaters. and Dillon’s for dancing. Or the student may rather take advantage of the continual entertainment to be found on the colorful local sidewalks--the art a nd juwelry exhibits, dancers, musicians, fortune tellers, or mimes. And to fit the student pocketbook, the quaint little shops that line the Village streets offer such merchandise as diamonds, $95 shoes, and $200 art reproductions (perfect for the dorm room). If one desperately craves any of these items, you could always arrange to rob one of the numerous banks in the area. Combine the academics at UCLA with the spirit, culture, and sunny (often smoggy) skies of the Southland, and you have created the Bruin environment.
