To be a UCLA student is to experience a special Bruin environment. Naturally, the environment centers about the high level of academics at UCLA; however, this has a personal side. While some prefer to study in one of the busy libraries, others find it more satisfactory to attend to the books in the beautiful outdoor surroundings afforded by the Bruin campus--retreating into nature ' s realm offers a sense of well-being. In the end, after ten fleeting weeks of a quarter, everyone shares the same experience; as each invividual clenches those familiar blue books, grade cards, Scantrons and good ol ' number 2 pencils during the tumultuous period known simply as finals . Apart from academia, there is the aspect of the Bruin experience which is the tradition of campus spirit. There are the sports, rallies, card stunts, Homecoming, Mardi Gras, University Sing, the pride in joining Japanese and European tourists in donning Bearwear, and the feeling that the sight of a student from U.S.C. should immediately trigger a reaction of disgust or pity. Then there is the distinctive Southern California atmosphere that prompted a Madison, Wisconsin sportswriter, prior to the UCLA-Wisconsin football contest, to present a provocative description: . . . the West Coast cult image of independence, freedom . . . barbecue pits, beach blankets. . .When they step off the plane tonight you half expect Frankie and Annette to be with the traveling party. . .
