Chi Alpha Delta, A sorority, disappeared from the pages of the 1943 yearbook for the first time since its founding in 1929. In fact, its members and the entire Japanese- American student popu- lation disappeared from UCLA for the next four years because they were part of 112,000 Japanese- Americans who were moved from the Pacific coast and locked away in internment campus in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Utah, and other states. Iva Ikuko Toguri, a 1939 zoology graduate of UCLA, was stranded in Japan during the war and was forced to broadcast anti-American speeches to the US forces in the Pacific. She was nicknamed Tokyo Rose by the American troops and was subsequently sentenced to prison by US officials and stripped of her American citizenship. She now lives in Chicago, steadfastly declares her innocence, and is fighting to clear her name. 18
