dedication Joe E. Brown ' s sports and war souvenirs are found along- side UCLA ' s own trophies in the Varsity Trophy room, one his many gifts to the students. The official presentation of the room (right) was made last year by the inimitable Brown himself. Joe waved Babe Ruth ' s famous sixtieth home run bat approvingly (above) while Ralph Gold, track star, was amazed by Boxer Primo Camera ' s size 23 shoes and football great Cal Rossi found out if Red Grange ' s 77 jersey fit him. Among Joe ' s other projects for the school are the main building at the University Summer camp for underprivileged children and the re- cently inaugurated Don Brown Memorial award to the most improved UCLA football player. Entertaining America and the world is the job of Joe E. Brown. He entered show business when only nine, and he has been with the profession ever since ... on the stage and in the movies. His greatest performances, however, were during the war when the whole world was his stage and the armed forces of many nations his audiences. Not only Joe, but the entire Brown family is UCLA minded. Two sons, Don and Joe Jr., attended UCLA and a daughter, Mary, is now on campus. Enthusiastic sportsmen, the boys played football and basket- ball, and Don held the student body president ' s chair in 1938-39. A captain in the Air Forces, Don was killed in a plane crash in October, 1942. Joe ' s gifts to the student body have been numerous ... all from the heart of an unselfish person. But the greatest gift of all is the feeling of school pride which he has imparted to the Westwood campus. Just when the going seems the toughest, his appearances and messages fill Bruins everywhere with an unconquerable spirit . . . that Joe E. Brown spirit.
