However, in all years, it has been a combination of Creations, Actions, Visions, and Promotions. Each person involved in the school: parent, student, and faculty member, is one of God's unique Creations. Our Actions consist of all athletic, academic, ,and extracurricular activities. The Visions have been those of many, the goals and dreams of students, teachers, and administration alike. And without promotions, theisupport of the community and parents, we would not have been able to have had these years to remember. CREATIONS. . . p. 6 ACTIONS. . . p. 82 vlsloNs . . . p. 136 PRoMorloNs . . . p. 182 gil . SHE SHARES HER LIFE She loves, she cares, she encourages. Mrs. Simons has been around Tyler Street Christian Academy for a total of eight years, and many have come to know her in a special way. Throughout the years she has shown her love and support for the students. She taught second and third grade her first year. She has taught reading in grades two through eight and has been cheerleader sponsor, pep squad sponsor, drama club sponsor, and senior class sponsor. All appreciate her encouragement, motivation, and craziness that cause many to greatly respect her as a teacher and a friend. To express this appreciation, the 1982 SWORD is dedicated to Mrs. Ramona Simons. Ng, ,,,.. Q- -.W -- .MW ,pix-:W - 1 4- , as-2 ls 4- I du.. ' -,,...--' Quizilla.. We should live in such harmony with one another . . . that together Qwej may with one voice glorify God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. fRomans 15:5-61 Even the organizations and teams here at X T.S.C.A. should conduct themselves so to edify their members and exemplify the love of Christ. To welcome the new headmaster, Dr. Carle Hunt, a reception was held in his honor on August 2, 1981, in Anderson Hall. Parents and students enjoyed refreshments and fellowship as they learned more about T.S.C.A., the new headmaster, and the new school year ahead. On August 20, 1981, the high school students and faculty met for orientation in Anderson Hall, NEW BEGINNINGS The headmaster shared some ideas for the new school year, the teachers were introduced, and the students were given their schedules. Following orientation, everyone boarded the buses and were off for a day of swimming, eating, and sharing with old and new friends alike. At last, on August 24, 1981, opening day arrived. Many parents were present at the assembly with the students, in which Dr. Hunt was introduced, various awards were presented, and students were directed to their classes. Later, a reception was given for the parents. 93 There was an air of excitement as the parents searched to find their children's classrooms, meet their teachers, and look at the student's work. The National Honor Society and the Student Council aided the parents if they got lost or confused. OPE HOUSE The teachers explained to the parents what the children were doing and what they wanted to do in the months ahead. They also explained their grading procedures and their discipline methods. After the parents completed their tours, they returned to Anderson Hall where the PTF had refreshments waiting. .A ff , , -. f l' if .X if Q5 A K . .... Ron Ball, Kentucky bred and graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary, repeatedly challenged thejunior high and high school students during the services of Spiritual Emphasis Week. SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS Ron was an agent of the Holy Spirit, convicting many to renew commitments and turn their lives around. There was a positive response from many students, some for the first time. During some of the past S.E.W.'s there were temporary emotional highs, but during this one students were making lasting and deeper commitments. Members are willing to sacrifice their time to help others. Membership in the National Honor Society is looked upon highly and strived after eagerly. Acceptance into the society is truly an honor. The Student Council, sponsored by Miss Yancy, is established to guide and serve the student body. Those elected to the Student Council have the qualities of both a leader and a servant. Throughout the year, the members have sponsored several dances, including the 1982 Tenth Anniversary Homecoming, operated a Valentines Day Post Office, and carried the voice of the student body to the administration. Their action is vital to the entire operation ofthe academy. The elementary children, under the direction of Deborah Simpson presented Ye Old Toy Shoppei' for the annual PTF Christmas program. The play was a look into a toy shop, where on that night the toys came to life. Garth Wilcoxson and Cindy Yancy had the roles of the elderly shopowners, Hans and his wife Gretchen. The Junior High Choir and the High School Band also performed during the play. Ye Old Toy Shoppe Portraying the delightful life size toys were the elementary children. Some of the student groups who allotted extra time to provide inspiration for the teams are the high school band and the pep squad. The Junior High Crusaders continued their winning tradition in spite of only one returning starter. Through time and dedication Coach Billy Bennett molded a new winning team. The young Crusaders exhibited sportsmanship, great team spirit, and lots of determination while uplifting the name of Tyler Street. UNICR HIGH BASKETBALL Coach Bennett feels that this team will assist future varsity teams greatly with the skills demonstrated this year. The Crusaders won first place in the TAPS Tourney and second place in district. Roy Campbell was awarded Most Valuable Player and Phillip Day was awarded All Tourney. With the help and leadership of these two players, the Crusaders ended a season with a record of thirteen wins and four losses. Although it was a short season, the Junior Varsity put forth a lot of effort despite the 0-6 record. UNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The team consisted of members from the Varsity bench and some junior high players. There were no conference games for the J.V., so an occasional scrimmage kept them occupied. They showed good potential for playing onthe varsity team inthe future. 118 ff 'ia my 4 I it ...-H. They ran out onto the court with high hopes, only to soon realize that Abilene was tougher than expected. They knew the battle had just begun. The first halfthey gave a good fight and were neck and neck. Approaching the third quarter Abilene took a lead not to be caught. They finally walked off the court with the State Regional title, Abilene 57, TSCA 45. The mighty Crusaders had many growing experiences at the beginning of the season with some tough competition. From the beginning to the end were thrills, close-calls, runaways, and some good tough ball games. District this year was a cake walk. Tyler Street Christian Academy began with an enrollment of ninety-three, tfaculty not includedj, under the leadership of Mr, Emerald Cummings, the headmaster. The charter teachers included Ramona Simons, Phyllis Vermillion, Kathy Chapman, David Jackson, and Judy Pierce. '72-'74 Within the next two years. the enrollment more than tripled, reaching near 400 by l974. Bare beginnings and gradual growth characterized these years. ln 1974, the school's first senior Class consisted of two students. The school yearbook. the Sword, began operation under the direction of Kathy Chapman. An annual high school activity. the ski trip, was also initiated. sponsored by the student council. 1 The sports department opened with Jr. High, Jr. Varsity, and Varsity basketball. The triumphant season ofthe Jr. High brought home the first trophy for T.S.C.A. We all take pride in the growth and victories of these first years. Mr. Emerald Cummings led Tyler Street Christian Academy through many changes as headmaster in the years l975-77. In 1975, the school newspaper, the 3 X Q X Shield, began reporting many exciting activities. The first annual school carnival held its first celebration with a circus theme. The most important progression in 1975 was a new addition to the school campus. A top floor was added to the memorial building and a new large library was built. Baseball, softball, and girls volleyball teams were added to the sports program. QW! .r vig., L.. '75-'77 - 5 il The bicentennial year, 1976, brought a special excitement to our nation and our school. Band and Choir programs were added to the curriculum. The first annual Junior-Senior Prom was held at the Royal Coach Inn. A very special parent-support organization, The Booster Club, was also formed in 1976 to aid the athletic department. They sprang into action almost immediately with the purchasing of two new buses in 1977, paid for by fund raising projects. The Lady Crusaders, the girls basketball teams, were added to the sports line-upjust in time for the first annual basketball homecoming held in 1977. The most exciting progression of 1977, however, was the ground breaking, building, and opening ofa new High School building complete with a spacious new gym and seven new classrooms. Change and progression certainly prevailed through the years 1975-1977. -- '78-'81 i ln-M, Several administrative changes occurred in the years 1978-81. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Morell led the school during several transition periods between headmasters. ln 1978, a new headmaster, John Garlock, came to T,S.C.A. 1978 proved to be a year of advancement and action J enrollment rose, activities increased andthe recently built high school building was in full use. Mft ln mid-year l979, Mr. Paul Colc took over the role of headmaster. Several activities added special special interest to the 78-79 school year, such as Space Dayw, the special Christmas parties for the under-privileged children, and the High School soccer team becoming the undisputed champions in the M.C.C.L, 1980 was a year of progress in academic and spiritual life. A spiritual emphasis week, held once each semester, was initiated to aid everyone in developing their faith. In l98l, a closeness continued to be developed between students and faculty as new friendships, grounded in Christ, were formed. On the lighter side, the Western spirit was corraled at T.S.C.A. as a Western Week and a Hoe Down dance were held. A special game was held in which the Varsity Basketball team played First Baptist in a game prior to a Maverick game at the newly built Reunion Arena in Downtown Dallas. Through the love of Christ, a dream come true has grown and progressed through an entire decade. With faith in the source of our successes, Jesus Christ, students and teachers look forward to the next decade at T.S.C.A. with excitement and confidence. During the next decade Dr. Hunt sees changes in lifestyles of students which will require changes in academic programs. For example, more High School students will be required to work while in school. To meet the needs of these students T.S.C.A.
