5... Ill XXXWUH ga : Q QFHCXQS 0 Completion of three new buildings in the fall of '77-Bonna Bess Vaughn Conservatory, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Sledge Dormitory and George VV. Pirtle Technology Building No. 3-brought the total campus buildings to 28. 0 Since its founding in 1926 the college has grown from cramped quarters at the old John Tyler High School to its present spread of 76 landscaped acres. 0 The college now offers more than 800 different courses and has an annual enrollment exceeding 10,000. Instrumental in this growth of TJC has been President Dr. H. E. Jenkins. He joined the college staff in 1934 as dean. Twelve years later he was named TJC's first independent presi- dent after Tyler voters approved a fl5500,000 bond to build TJC a separate campus. Under his direction, TJC moved to its present campus in 1948. Dr. Jenkins is not only recognized as one of the nation's top educators, but for his leadership in civic activities. His contributions to higher education were recognized when he was elected to Honorary Life Membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This honor is the highest recognition the Association can bestow and is reserved for the small number of men and women who have given extraordinary service to education in the South and leadership to regional accrediting. His dedication to higher education had been recognized earlier when he became the first junior college president elected to head the Southern Association. He is the only junior college president who has ever been elected president of the organization composed of educational institutions throughout the 11 Southern states. The 33rd degree Mason believes the junior college to be the one institution of higher education than accommodates both youth and adults and touches the taxpayer's pocketbook the lightest. His participation in professional junior college organizations proves he puts his beliefs into action. He has been past president of the Texas Association of Colleges and Universities, Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, Texas Association of Public Junior Colleges and the Texas Association of Public and Private Junior Colleges. He has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Association of Junior Colleges. Besides being president of the Southern Association, he has served on its Executive Committee, as chair- man ofthe Accrediting Committee and as a member of the Executive Council. On the national level he has been a member of the U. S. Advisory Committee of the U. S. Veterans Administration and a member of the U. S. Committee of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare on Student Scholarships, Aids and Assistance. Locally he has been the first potentate of Sharon Shrine Temple, past president of the Tyler Kiwanis Club and superintendent of Marvin Church Sunday School and chairman of the Board of Stewards.
