The first class was enrolled in September of 1951, On May 7, 1951, the Board of Trustees of Tyler junior College authorized the found- ing of the school. Plans were formulated and presented to the State Board of Nurse Ex- aminers for approval. This board recommended that the school should be a central nurs- ing school with its own charter from the State of Texas. In such a school, the students would receiveinstruction in Basic Sciences in Tyler junior College, with Clinical experi- ence to be given in the two leading hospitals of Tyler and the Health Department, and affiliations in Pediatrics and Psychiatry to be arranged in one of the larger Texas cities. This is the plan that was adopted. Provisional approval was granted by the State Board of Nurse Examiners. Standards and policies that are being adopted by the school in its development are in accordance with recommendations of the National Nursing Accrediting Service. We know of no reason why the school should not have full accreditation by state and national accrediting agencies after it has been in existence for the required three year period. Our graduates will be eligible to take the State Board Examinations to become registered nurses. We sincerely hope that the school will do a great deal toward providing better nursing care for the people of East Texas. Many followers say the 1951 Apache team was the greatest Tyler junior College has produced in its his- tory. Only one other team in the schoo1's annals, the 1947 team, equaled the 10 straight win record set by last year's squad. The Tribe came out on top in ten hectic battles, compiling 413 points, while holding their op- ponents to only 124. These victories were over teams representing the best in five states. After their eighth consecutive victory, the one over Kilgore which cinched the Big Six Conference crown, they emerged at the top in the national rankings. The dream the citizens of Tyler have been looking forward to for six years finally came true when the Apaches were invited to Pasadena, Calif- ornia to represent the West in the Seventh Annual Jun- ior Rose Bowl game. He also scored two touch- downs, as did Charlie McNeil with his terrific running and johnny Linney with his passing. APACHES TAKE CAMERON IN FIRST CONFERENCE ENCOUNTER In an extremely rough battle played on foreign soil the Apaches made it two in a row by defeating the Cameron Aggies of Lawton, Oklahoma, 27-0. This was the first con- ference encounter for both teams. Leading only by 14 points, it wasnit until the fourth quarter that the Indians started rolling. However, the Apaches Scored a TD in the second period, two in the third, and once again in the fourth to take the victory. Andrews again led the scoring with two six- pointers. LINNEY'S PASSES SINK HOUSTON Johnny Linney had one of the best nights of his career last October 11, when the Apache tribe ground out a hard earned 52-19 victory over the University of Houston B-team. Three touch- down passes by the All-American in the early stages of the game built up a lead that was nev- er overcome by the Cougars, despite their des- perate attempts in the last half. THE GREATEST VICTORY OF THEM ALL WAS THE ONE OVER THE RANGERS In their most magnificent victory of the season the Apaches racked up the largest margin ever registered in their five year old grudge battle with Kilgore by downing the Rangers 26-7. Seventeen thousand fans, the largest crowd ever to see a football battle in East Texas, saw the terrific power of the Tribe out- class the slightly favored Rangers. This was truly the greatest victory of them all, for it gained the deserving Apaches the number one spot in the nation. It was a bitterly contested battle in the first half, but the outmanned group from the Oil City succumbed to the Apache power in the second half. Tyler was ahead by the narrow margin of 6-0 at intermission, . but the fighting Rangers stormed back to take a 7-6 lead shortly after the second half got underway. johnny Linney completed three touchdown passes. Tyler's second touchdown climaxed a sustained 83- yard drive. The drive was culminated by a 12-yard end run by Bill Andrews. The entire crowd, 41,971, the second largest ever to see two junior col- leges clash, was on edge from the moment Billy Andrews returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, until Charlie McNeil's desperate field goal try on the final play of the game. On the first play from scrimmage Al Napoleon, Pasadena's Hawai- ian scatback, followed his blockers beautifully around end all the way to paydirt. After that fifty seconds both teams settled down to a hard fought game. The Apaches scored the next two touchdowns, one on a sustained 68-yard drive and the other on a break, a recovered fumble on the Bulldog 28. The host team intercepted a Linney pass and went on to score their second touchdown to trail at halftime 19-14. The third quarter was the best period for Pasadena, their powerful backfield and massive line enabled them to gain 14 points. The Apaches fought their hearts out in the final quarter, but all they could squeeze out was 7 points and that was on a pass from Bobby Page to End Guy Thompson. It was a hectic finish for an excellent season, but the Tribe played a sensational game, a game of which they can certainly be proud. ii 'A ig: f' -- AUSTIN STUBBS B A Glltlfd Bastrop ' .ff ,C Commerce. f-nl 1. 1 As he steps off the plane, Coach Floyd Wagstaff receives the key of the city from members of the Pasadena junior Chamber of e .1'fa:fw i of Q' ' 1 ' sf' , r fv' R ' 1 'gri t ln? 3. u 'J 'z fi 'a ' L4 'E W' 'T' , Y' Sv f 'Q A , R T I ,uv I . . The 1952 Apaches have lost more games than any team since Floyd Wagstaff be- came head coach in 1946. However, there was 1101 a weaker quintet in Apacheland this year-the Apaches have merely met stronger and more colorful opposition. Several of the losses were to freshman teams of Southwest Conference schools, surely these senior colleges field strong freshman teams, for their players are the future basketball stars of the Southwest. Other losses were to Oklahoma teams as a result of their ball-control type of play. The Apaches also dropped a contest to one of the strongest senior college teams of West Texas, Wayland. It may appear to some that we are making excuses for our losses, but why should we? Despite their several losses, the Apaches have compiled a record few junior colleges of the nation can equal. i Era X V 7 Lloyd Giles goes up for tipoff against Garden City. -RP JAMES SITTON Guard Laneville E 52 4 sz X a '1 NACIII5 l JACK MOSHER GENE MCKIBBEN Guard Center Texas City Lake jackson Page 103 N-. The National junior College Athletic Association was formed at a meeting of coaches held May 14, 1938 at Fresno State College, Fresno, California, the purpose being to promote and improve junior college athletics throughout the United States. An invitational basketball tournament held at Compton, California, in 1945 grew into the Associations Regional and National basketball tournament program as we know it today. The first NJCAA National Tournament was held in 1948 at Springfield, Missouri, with the Apaches finishing sixth. Herb Richardsons outstanding performance earned him an All-American berth. The following year the tournament was moved to its pres- ent site in Hutchinson, Kansas. Led by jerry Champion, jose Palafox, and Bryan Mill- er, boys who later made All-American, the Tribe edged out Hutchinson to win first place in the National Tournament. Although TJC undoubtedly had the strongest team in its history in 1950, they were defeated in tournament play, this loss placing them fourth. O'Neal Weaver was Tyler's contribution to the All-Tournament Ten that year. Last year the Apaches repeated their 1949 performance by overpowering Northeast Mississippi in the tournament finals. Weaver was again named All-American, as was jack Mosher. Page 107 - XX :HW Az, 1 . Q ,,...,,,,A 0 , , IP Nm, -+4 A ,, . 4 N5 , -UWM N fig 5 c 'QQ' wif?
