Each brick and stone in the house was quarried by the McGavock slaves, the tim- ber was cut and prepared at the sawmill on the estate. Much of the furniture in the home was imported from England and France. Oriental rugs and ancestral por- traits grace the four downstairs parlors and in the entrance foyer two interesting chairs once owned by Rudolph Valentino are found. To step into this beautiful home is to step from the harshness and reality of today into the cool harmony and tran- quillity of yesterday. The original two-story home, built in 1802, still stands in perfect condition on the property. The mansion house, built in 1859, is saidto have been planned by the architect, William Strickland. During the Civil War the home narrowly escaped destruction by Federal forces.

Many years ago William Harding, dis- covering the beautiful, rolling land between the Cumberland and Stones Rivers, erected there a modest white brick home and called it Two Rivers Farm. The house and lands were inherited by Mrs. David H. McGavock, his daugher, and they have since remained in the McGavock family. , I

1 In the fall of 1960 a new school was opened in the Donelson area. Located on McGavock Pike, the school was situated only one hundred yards from the meeting of the Stones and the Cumberland Rivers. The campus site had once been part of the McGavock Estate, often called Two Rivers Plantation. It was because of these influences that the school received its name. Mr. Chester LaFever, principal, was joined by twelve teachers, a librarian, and a secretary that first year. Starting with only the seventh and eighth grades, the school has added a grade each year. Inthe fall of 1964 the final grade was included. The presence of the first graduating class is indeed a milestone in Two Rivers history. The school enrollment has grown from four hundred and twenty in 1960 to thirteen hundred and fifty students in 1965. English IV, French II, Sociology, Physics, American Government and Economics, and Speech were added this year and most likely, there will be other interesting curricular offerings in the near future. The rapid growth of the student body has necessitated the building of new classrooms, a girls' gym, an industrial arts room, a band room, and a stadium. The students at Two Rivers have seen the school grow from ajunior high school into a full-fledged high school. Their pride has increased from year to year in a school whose future development promises even greater achievement. 6
