Basketball in Review Early in October, Coach Art Kenney issued the call for the initial basketball season. He was greeted by a large group of eager candidates and the work of rebuilding a grad- uation- riddled team began. Returning for the Green Wave were Claude Jeffers, All-Star center, and Wendel Glines, regular guard. Bill Wright, Fulton Mountain, Billy King, Bill Houghton, Herb McGee, Morris Lennon, Paul Wright, and Francis Mountain came up from the Junior Varsity squad eager to prove themselves ready for Varsity competition. The squad drilled long and faithfully and began to show promise, but an early ankle injury to Claude Jeffers dimmed the hopes of the fighting Green Wave, and we dropped our first' two games by close margins. Billy King, joined the injured list with a tonsillectomy, followed by the mumps, which added to our woes. Shortly after the New Year we returned to strength and the Green Wave began to roll again in a manner reminiscent of our great champions of 1949. Dow, Bethlehem, Lisbon, Haverhill, Woodsville, and Haverhill went down in order before this courageous crew, Twin, issued notice that they must be seriously considered when our fighting team invaded Haverhill who was riding on the crest of a nine-game winning streak and completely outplayed them from the opening whistle with Claude Jeffers, Wendel Glines, and Bill Wright playing outstanding ball, ably supported by Fulton Mountain, Bill King, and big Jim Worsley Our two victories.over Haverhill proved to be the only games lost by the latter. The second Haverhill game on our court brought out a record crowd which taxed even the standing room, and the large crowd left happy after watching our machine-like quintet again distinguish itself by the score of 39s35. Whitefield at Whitefield remained and our boys with six straight wins behind them and a tourney bid in the offering, met an experienced club and battled them down to the final whistle losing by a three-point margin after leading all the way--a tough one to lose, but our boys and fans showed that they are champions as sports in losing as well as in winning Wendel Glines, who established a scoring record for our new gym with thirty points' against Whitefield, was one of the league- leading scorers and Bill Wright whose improve- ment and general excellent play made the Green Wave so formidable will both be hard to replace. Wendel and Bill, together with Claude Jeffers, participated in the All-Star game, and our younger boys now have a mark at which to shoot. The prospects look good however, for the next year with Claude Jeffers, Fulton Mountain, Bill King, Jim Worsley, Herb McGee, Bill Hough-ton, Morris Lennon, Paul Wright and Francis Mountain all returning with a years experience.
