, -L...-,Af - ' It is a sincere privilege and pleasure for me to have commanded TUTUILA during a portion of her extended cruise. The Cruise Book covers the period 9 May 1966 Cdate of departure from Norfolk, Virginiaj to I5 Feb 1967. I think it is very important for me to comment on the thoroughness, wisdom, and forehandedness of Commander Ward G. Byington, USN, whom I relieved in Bangkok, Thailand on 15 October 1966, and the oilicers and men who worked so hard in preparing TUTU- ILA for 'distant duty, Their efforts, which began in March 1966, have made it possible for TUTUILA to carry out her mission in the Paciiic Fleet-repair services to the fleet. The performance of all hands has been magnificent. The initiative, imagination, and ingenuity displayed in the successful' completion and solution of literally hundreds of pro- blems and jobs, in an environment where strict reliance on past ex- perience, or established procedures would have been insuflicient, have been thoroughly outstanding. TUTUILA, in the Service Force, U.S. Paciiic Fleet under the command of Rear Admiral E.B. Hooper, USN, operated as a unit of SERVICE GROUP THREE and TASK FORCE 73, COMSERVGRU THREE and Commander Task Force 73, Rear Admiral F.E. aney, USN. While in VIETNAMESE waters,TUTUILA was under the operational control of Commander Naval Forces Viet- nam, Rear Admiral N.G. WARD, USN and Commander Naval Support Activity, Saigon, Captain H.T. King, USN. Prior to publication of this book, TUTUILA had served more than 6 months in direct support of U.S. Naval Operations in vietnam. To the oflicers and men who served aboard TUTUILA on this long, adventurous cruise, well Done and Good Luck in your future endeavors. L. P. TREADWELL
