A ‘ • V. 1980 TUSCOLIAN TUSCOLA HIGH SCHOOL TUSCOLA, ILLINOIS As our high school years draw to an end, we should realize that these years have been an important time in our lives. We've grown, both physically and mentally, and are better prepared to face the challenges which await us. Weather it be college, work, or married life that we go onto, doesn't matter, what matters is that we've begun new, more independent lives. As we begin these lives, each of us will take something special with us. That something is memories. From our memories, we will be able to recall all the good times, and even the bad. The joys and disappointments we experienced will always have a place in our hearts. These and other memories are what this book is all about; and hopefully in the future, we can look back at these pages and see 'The Way We Were'. . § — SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS 2$ U5 'INDERCLASSMEN 73 3 IN APPRECIATION As a token of our appreciation, the '79-'80 yearbook has been dedicated to an outstanding member of the faculty at TCHS, Mrs. Kay Kleiss. Mrs. Kleiss has dedicated many years to the teaching of her students in the sciences. But Mrs. Kleiss is more than just a teacher, she is a friend. Whenever one of her students has a question, all they have to do is ask, and she will explain the answer until the student understands completely. She cares about her students in a way that many teachers sometimes fail to do. We'd like to express our appreciation to Mrs. Kleiss for her contribution in helping to better TCHS, its students, and community. Her patience, willingness to help others, and devotion to teaching have been an outstanding example to everyone. 4 FACULTY _L j- ooe V acL -tVyg. c.V a_v ce -to 0L0 id .W .Qa. t ) e ,uou. a. we Cou_ d. coe? -from 'The Wa Vte Were BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education is responsible for determining curriculum, establishing policies, and formulating and implementing the budget. The team's leading hitters were Mark Oakley and Greg Campbell. Oakley was also selected as a member of the All-State Team. Coach Kincaid looks optimistically toward the '79-'80 season when many experienced players will be returning. Good luck, Warriors! 30 “THE RUNNING WARRIORS Above picture: Standing I. to r.: Coach Gary Little, Phil Kennedy, Greg Dukeman, Eric Adams, Dan Strole, Dave Cav-enaille, Dan Hance, B.C. Sitting, I. to r.: Danny Jordan, Brian Dobson, Chris Conerty, Mark Stahler, Neal Borries, Mike Stahler, Brian Harris, Duff Hoel, Gary Goodwin, and Mark Farris. In looking at the record of our Freshman team, one might think that we had an average team. This, however, is not the case. When the team lost, it was only by a few points as in the Shelbyville and Monti-cello games. But, when we won, it was a whopping margin. One might say that we smoked them. The team beat Unity 52-0 and Sullivan 42-0. This is great for a team just starting out. Keep up the good work, fellas! 37 BOY S VARSITY BASKETBALL Top row, L to R: Coach Gene Murray, Mark O'Bryan, Steve Kalmar, Dave Cavenaile, Don Maddox, John Murray, Greg Porter, Andy Gangloff, Coach Kerry Kincaid. Bottom row, L to R: Greg Campbell, Mark Murray, Mark Oakley, Tom Weemer, Colby Decker, Dan Lovekamp, Dirk Dietrich. 38 The Tuscola Warriors Varsity basketball team began its season with an advantage because of the large number of returning lettermen. Even though the team got off to a slow start by placing fourth in the Okaw Valley Conference Tournament, the season progressed in the Warriors' favor, as they went on to win the Jamaica Tournament, outdoing last year's consolation championship. The Varsity team, which consisted of seven seniors, four juniors, and one freshman, and coached by Gene Murray and Kerry Kincaid, had a very rewarding and successful season. 39 J-V BASKETBALL nis t - BASKETBALL MANAGERS Standing, I to r: Rick Mooday, Andy Gangloff, Mark O'Bryan, Brian Marler, David Cavenaile, Don Maddox, John Murray, Bob Beasley, Greg Porter, Mike Verschelden, Tom Peach. Kneeling: Coach Kincaid. Coached by Mr. Kincaid, the Junior Varsity Basketball team proved itself to be a most dedicated ball club. There were long hours of practice filled with hard work, but the team's never ending spirit and enthusiasm were always there, too. The J-V team, like all other teams, greatly benefitted from the efforts of the managers who faithfully attended them. Standing in back: Coach Crowell and Coach Englehart. ENGLEHART’S ENTHUSIASTS With experience, enthusiasm, and the determination to win, the girls' varsity basketball team entered their 1980 season. Under the direction of new coaches, Bill Englehart and Nancy Crowell, the girl cagers learned many new plays and basketball techniques. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the Warriors lost two of their starters, and several of the J. V. players dressed on varsity to help out the team. The girls have improved greatly since their beginnings in 1977, and hopefully will continue to improve and play successfully in the future. 42 Girls' J. V. Standing behind: Coaches Crowell and Englehart. CROWELL’S CAGERS The 1980 J. V. girls' basketball team consisted mainly of Freshmen and Sophomores. They were introduced to the fundamentals of basketball by first-year coach Miss Crowell. Due to their competitive spirit and effort, their skills were steadily improved. Since there was much to learn, the season was completed in a seemingly short amount of time, and the girls anxiously await next year's basketball season. 43 FRESHMAN BASKETBALL Standing from I. to r.: Tim Campbell, John Kleiss, John Brookins, Bill Fruit, Eric Adams, Jeff Wilson, Scott VonLanken, and Neal Borries. Along with teaching P.E. at the grade school, Mr. Bob Scott is in his first year of coaching the Freshman Basketball Team at TCHS. Enthusiastic and well-spirited, the Freshman team proved to be a challenging opponent to their competitors. Gaining much experience, the ball club should prove to be very successful next year, as they were this year. As pictured above, the TCHS Latin Club shows their enthusiasm for the Roman way of life in full scale. Many activities of the Latin Club included a Halloween party, Post-Christmas party, and the traditional Roman Banquet. The Freshmen will always remember the fun (and embarrassment) of Toga Day. Not only is the Latin language learned, but also the tradition and the style of Roman living. Some people will say that Latin is a dead language, but ask any of Miss Cox's Latin students, and they will vehemently reply that Latin is very much alive. 52 Three Latin Scholars and their magistra, playing a challenging game of Knucklebones. With more performances than ever before, they have entertained audiences from all around the area. Each year the Swing Choir attends a one-day clinic sponsored by Western Illinois University. But this year, through a money making project in early December, they raised sufficient funds to attend a week-end workshop at White Pine Ranch in Oregon, Illinois. She is lb years old and from the thriving city of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Bianca lived with the Charles Simpson family for the duration of her stay in the United States. She indicated that she came to the U. S. to experience the lifestyle here. Bianca is an only child so having sisters , Kim and Kendra, has provided her with a new environment. She noticed many differences between T.C.H.S. and her own school. For example, school in Brasil began at 7:00 a.m. and ended at noon. Bianca was enrolled in 12 classes, all of which were not held daily. The social life in a small town like Tuscola also differed greatly from the social life in a large urban area such as Rio de Janeiro. Bianca and her friends spent the majority of their time on the beach. She feels that the people at Brasil are much more affectionate than Americans are. We hope that Bianca enjoyed being with us as much as we enjoyed having her. 107 108 SENIOR HONORS DAR This year's Daughters of American Revolution Award went to Jill Holden. She has also been honored with four Rotary Awards, the Hugh O'Brien Leadership Award, a Chemistry Award, an Illinois State Scholarship, Most Intellectual and Most Likely to Succeed, and was a delegate to Girl's State. In her High School career, Jill has been involved in Explorers, Latin Club, volleyball, yearbook, pom-pon, and scholastic bowl. Her junior year she was Class President. Jill plans on attending the U of I this fall in the field of premed. SAR Mark Murray is this year's recipient of the Sons of American Revolution Award. He has also been named an Illinois State Scholar and Most Likely to Succeed in the Class of 1980. He plans to attend EIU this fall, but has not claimed a major. In his four years at TCHS, Mark has been very active in athletics, participating in football, basketball, and track. In addition to lettering in all of these sports, he also received All-Okaw defensive end in football. Next year, though, not only will the sports' fans miss Mark, but so will the members of Latin Club. It will be hard for them to forget their (obstinate?) Emperor. 109 SENIOR HONORS Jean Hartman and Jill Holden Two members of the 1980 Senior Class who received special recognition were the Salutatorian, Jean Hartman, and the Valedictorian, Jill Holden. Through four years of study at T.C.H.S., Jill and Jean consistently demonstrated a desire to achieve academic excellence and earned the highest grade point averages within their class. An additional honor was bestowed upon Tom when one of his pieces was among five pieces selected as Best of the Show and received the Hallmark Nomination Award. SPECIAL RECOGNITION T.C.H.S. seniors who received special recognition this year were: Mark Murray, Jill Holden, Jean Hartman, Brenda Gillenwater, and Devon Flesor. These five were designated as Illinois State Scholars on the basis of their academic standing within their class, and their performance on the ACT test. Congratulations seniors, T.C.H.S. is proud of you. Brenda, Devon Ufa Throughout the year, many individuals were honored for their contributions in athletic activities. Mr. But-kovitch presented plaques to Mr. Hop Conner and Mr. Pat Cummings in appreciation for their services in flag-raising ceremonies. Athletic banquets also provided a setting for recognizing the achievements and the contributions of participants, coaches, and area residents. 117 US!!! Is it a camera? This year's yearbook staff, under the superb direction of Mr. Eiben, has dedicated many hours toward the production of the '79-'80 Tuscolian. Meeting every Monday night from 6:30 to uncertainty, and on occasional Saturdays, the staff put together one of the best yearbooks, at least in our opinion, that TCHS has seen in a long while. Our rookie sponsor began a new set-up in putting together this yearbook. Three, instead of the usual two, editors were appointed. Jill Holden, production editor, and her staff of Chris Clevidence, Todd Hausman, Barb Studnicka, Bonnie Webster, Rinda Webster, and Leann Williamson, were in charge of layouts. By the end of the year, all were skilled at using proper croppers . Jean Hartman, copy editor, and her staff of Brian Burress, Cathy Conerty, and Lori Ferguson, wrote and typed all of the words seen in the book. Occasionally, mistakes were made, but the defudger was always at hand to correct any error. Last, but not least, is Gary Doud, photography editor, and his staff of Lynn Boyce, Dirk Dietrich, Sandy Foreman, Dan Hance, and Anita Hartman, who were in control of the taking and developing of pictures. Their efficiency was shown through Dirk's frequent Fox Photo deliveries. The staff, however, did not spend every moment working. They usually relaxed after meetings with parties at Dutch Hutch. One such get-together was highlighted by the arrival of little Sarah Lorraine Eiben. The staff also ate well at each meeting. Gary provided doughnuts, and several others brought various munchies. To celebrate the Christmas season, a party was held at the Webster household. Uno, euchre, and Scrabble were among the games enjoyed by all. After a year of working together, the staff grew closer as friends, and will hold many memories of the good and bad times dear. The Editors 118 We would like to thank the following people for their contributions they made to this book: Mr. Hart, Miss Cox, Rosie and Paul, Mr. Hastings and the staff of the Tuscola Review, and the Board of Education. Their help was in-dispensible and was appreciated by the entire staff. 119 120 XI u e had 'f' e chance 4o do if al a airx, Tell nr e would we ? Could we ?
