Eighty Two FH A Activities for 1970-71 For the year 1970-71, the Future Homemakers of America increased their club membership to 80 members. In September ten members served at the Teachers Tea, which was held at East Prairie School. Next, the members tried their talents at cooking and held a bake sale during Tuscola's Old Fashion Days. Two members also made use of their talents by displaying Travel Through the Years in a window downtown. In October the club attended the annual Section 16 Rally, which was held at Newman. The same month they were invited to a wiener roast by Villa Grove. Our money-making project for the year was selling Tom Wat Kits. The club added to the school spirit by decorating the halls at Homecoming and at Christmas. In February the club held their annual Sweetheart Dance. The band was Beaver Creek Ridge, and the theme was Love Story. Jean Waters reigned over the dance as the new Sweetheart Queen. At the end of the year the members held a style show of their own clothes projects and also had a tea for the eighth graders and their mothers. STANDING: Kathy Romine, Johne Huber, Debbie Jolley, Nancy Pendergrass. SEATED: Micki McGuire, Ron Kennedy, Jeff Beals, Gary Lake, Kathy Welborn. These students are the ones who help to bring relief from lectures. They run the projector when those good and sometimes not-so-good films are available. They also look after the films and Mrs. lies keeps all equipment in working order. Projectionists TOP ROW: Kevin Waite, Jeff Lake, Dave Bozarth, Jon Surma, Mark Owen, Jim Cox, Sue Bodoh. This helps to make the meetings calm and not as hectic as some of the chaotic meetings often experienced by the larger clubs. All of the members have a project which they work on at the bimonthly meetings. At these times with the help of Mrs. Kleiss, they learn that scientific studies require both interest and patience. They ran the paper machine in the hall, organized the Homecoming parade, sold popcorn at the games, and sponsored the Appalachia Drive at Christmas along with FHA. To become a member it is necessary to petition, then turn in the petition to Mrs. Hall, the sponsor. Eighty-Six Student Council 4 As a representative of the student body, this organization presents the students' views on various subjects. This keeps them busy, though, because the students are always on the go. ribe The organization of Tribe was changed this year, although its purpose of backing the cheerleaders and teams was the same. Tribe, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Blevins and Mr. Fredericks, raised their voices and the spirits of the teams. Officers for 1970-71 were: President, Debbie Jolley; Vice-President, Nancy Alexander; Secretary, Gale Wineland; Treasurer, Georgianna Hillard; Student Council, Jean Waters. T-Club Members for 70-71 The Tuscolian Staff for the school year of 1970-71 was an altogether different staff. Instead of having the traditional all Senior staff, this year our staff was composed of eleven new members from the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes. Included in this staff were three Sophomores, four Juniors, and four Seniors. Each head member of the yearbook had a helper. Lynn Beltz, Editor, had Nancy Ellis for her assistant. John Waters, Business Manager, had Nancy Wenskunas for his assistant. Gary Lake and Jim Lee were photographers. Beth Quinn, Kim Dillion, Jerie Wills, and Candy Christman worked on layouts. Our typist was Karen Pulley. Not only were the staff members new in composing a yearbook, but it was Mr. Best's first year as advisor. One Hundred Eleven Our First Male Indian KENNY OGDEN Tuscola's Cheerleaders and Indian have kept the school booming through the year 1970-71. Enthusiasm is a characteristic the cheerleaders and Kenny have been able to achieve within this school year, but the winning games always helped out, too! One Hundred Twelve Activities Cathy Weber and Randy Eaton Jane Phillips and Dennis Chaplin Homecoming 1970 Jean Waters and Kenneth Ogden Debbie Jolley and Dennis Ryan One Hundred Fifteen v This Magic Moment Homecoming 1970 was indeed a magic moment as couples danced to the music of the Sounds Unlimited amidst silver stars floating on the walls and decorations of green and yellow. During the coronation the crowd waited breathlessly for the magic moment when Johne Huber and Larry Ring were crowned 1970 Homecoming Queen and King. Earlier in the evening, at halftime of the Homecoming game with Villa Grove, it was announced that the Junior float had won first place with the title BIG TRACKS, the Senior float came in second with MASH, the Freshman float was awarded third prize with TRUE GRIT, and the Sophomore float was fourth with A DEATH IN THE CONFERENCE. An addition to the Homecoming Parade this year was the Christ's Kids float called THE GREAT HOMECOMING. One Hundred Sixteen One Hundred Seven teen Prom 1970 The huge splashing fountain provided an authentic touch and a glittering addition to the decorations. Eleven so called slaves helped to make the Junior-Senior Prom a success. One of their tasks included serving, as well as cleaning up the kitchen afterwards. One Hundred Eighteen The time and effort it took to decorate for this prom is all worth it for one perfect evening. Couples had a chance to enjoy old-fash ion Southern hospitality for one evening as they danced in the atmosphere of an old Southern mansion. Sophomore servers appeared as colored mammies and porters and provided the couples with refreshments. Couples danced to the music of the Eye before joining friends at the theater to see April Fools . Mirror, mirror, on the wall . . One Hundred Nineteen Arsenic and Old Lace Charley Debbie Allen and Jean Waters played two old-maid sisters who practiced a peculiar charity --killing old lonely men! Complications arose when the twelfth quite dead old gentleman was stuffed into a window seat and discovered by several surprised people. This play, as well as CHARLEY, was directed by Mrs. Pat Heusser. This play was performed without scenery and with the three actors sitting on the stage in plain, dark outfits. Special lighting effects established the mood and showed the passing of time. CHARLEY told the story of a thirty-five year old idiot, played by Phil Jordan, whose level of intelligence was brought up to that of a genius by a miraculous operation. But the effects were only temporary, and Charley faced the prospect of returning to a moron's I.Q. Karen Waite, portrayed at left, played the females in the play. The play was different from anything performed at TCHS before, and it was enjoyed by all. Without the cooperation of every staff member, producing this yearbook would have been difficult, if not impossible. To our advisor, Mr. Best, goes sincere appreciation. Now the book is finished--as is the year. All the tedious hours of drawing layouts, planning and taking pictures, and writing copy, are all over. With this yearbook, some are ending many wonderful experiences in high school. But rather than an end, it is a beginning-the start of a new life for the graduates, and the attainment of a higher step in the advance of underclassmen. As time pushes on at TCHS, with lockers closing for the final time, the thunder of pep rallies fading from the gym, and the halls growing dim and silent, I hope that the 1970-71 TUSCOLIAN will keep this year fresh and alive in each of your minds.
