The Tuscolian Tuscola Community High School Tuscola, Illinois 1969 The Free Spirit It is a spirit which frees us and joins us Terry Binnion, guidance director, works with students, faculty, and parents to help students solve their social, emotional, educational, and vocational problems. 4 Administrators Have Au esome Responsibility The opening of Tuscola’s newest educational center, East Prairie School, required long, arduous pre-planning sessions by the administration and board of education. Students attending grades six through eight now have the most up-to-date facilities in the area as well as beautiful physical surroundings. Jack Williams, Unit Superintendent, and William Butkovich, High School Principal, coordinate the programs of their respective positions to keep them running smoothly. BOARD OF EDUCATION: Front: Robert Reeder, Willis Winn, Althea Deaver, Merle Rahn. Back: Dr. Melvin I-ossman, A. F.. Kleiss, David Rice, Jr. DENNIS COLLIER Mathematics-Science Facultq Expands Curriculum Offerings Teachers work together to improve their teaching methods and to keep their courses up-to-date. But the TCHS faculty is engaged in many other aspects of school besides classroom teaching. Making up tests, grading papers, planning class procedure, and sponsoring various extra curricular activities are just a few of the many ways that our teachers become involved at Tuscola High School. The play which contained a web of complicated themes, ranging from statecraft and courtly love to witchcraft and falcony, was woven together skillfully by the central characters, Arthur (Mike Waters) and Guenevere(Debbie Allen). Indeed, the audience did think back on all the tales that they remembered--of Camelot. Crossing over the footbridge created an imaginative mood, as couples tossed coins into the miniature pool and made wishes. Banquet servers chosen from the sophomore class were authentically attired in Japanese costumes. They scurried to and from ‘Charlie Chin’s Chow House to serve a deliciously prepared dinner to members of the Junior and Senior classes and their guests. Prom-goers danced to the music of the Tribe before joining friends for the usual round of after-the-prom festivities and the annual trek to Turkey Run State Park on Sunday. 46 47 TOP ROW: L. Because the Student Council is composed of representatives from each class and organization, it represents the entire student body. In the fall the pre-game bonfire and the Homecoming parade were planned by the Council members and prizes were awarded to winners entered in float competition. During the year outstanding assembly programs included the world-famous violinist, Rubinoff, the University of Illinois concert band, and a stimulating presentation by Ray Eliot, Assistant Athletic Director and former football coach of the University of Illinois. Mr. Eliot’s thoughts were directed toward the premise that the principles of spirit which apply on the athletic field are identical to those all must apply to life itself. In conjunction with member Okaw schools, the Council attends conference meetings with a special inter-school tradition being a dance and social hour given by the host school after the Arcola-Tuscola football game. Selling notebook and typing paper plus the popcorn concession are the club’s money making projects used to finance their various activities. FT A HOSTS COUNTY BANQUET To interest good students in the career of teaching and to acquaint them with the many areas of the profession is the aim of the Future Teachers Association. Busy preparations preceded the annual county banquet which was held at Tuscola in November. Guest speaker, Steve Teel, compared and contrasted the educational system of European schools with our own; he also showed slides taken during the Teel family’s year in Belgium. 50 SCIENCE STUDENTS ORGANIZE All students of biology, chemistry, and physics classes were welcomed to Mrs. Kleiss’ newly formed science club in September. Members were encouraged to work individually on special research projects and, hopefully, to enter these projects in the annual U. of I. Science Fair. As an additional activity during the first semester, club members explained the cause and effect of basic chemical properties to students in the elementary science classes. TOP ROW: B. Anderson, G. ACTIVITIES The Future Farmers of America is a national organization for boys interested in agriculture and its many varied fields. Members ‘practice brotherhood, honor rural opportunities and responsibilities, and develop those qualities of leadership which a Future Farmer should possess. Each year the F.F.A. has money making projects such as selling hog troughs and Christmas cards which help to meet the expenses of the annual F.F.A. Parent-Son Banquet. Other activities include soil judging, parliamentary procedure competition, and grain and livestock shows. In November the members got an early start to attend the International Livestock Show in Chicago. 52 Toward New Horizons Toward New Horizons, motto of the F.H.A., expresses the purpose of the organization. The Tuscola chapter this year sponsored a number of activities that contributed to the development of members both as individuals and as members of society. Fund raising activities were most successful as the girls sold a record number of items from Tom- Vat kits. MADONNA WILHELM Betty Crocker Homemaking Award TOP ROW: K. Welborn, S. Betzold, J. After school meetings give the girls an opportunity to enjoy more sport activities than they could get during their regular gym period. In order to have sufficient funds to send girls to summer camp, to play days, and to sponsor the annual club banquet, members sold candles before the Christmas season. The project was very successful as approximately one-half the girls sold over $25 worth of these candles. Rita Allen’s role as G.A.A. presiding officer is an exhausting one?? 54 Projection Club Provides Valuable Service Students admitted to Projection club must pass a practical test in the operation of a variety of audio-visual equipment. Supervised by Mrs. Anita Brown, the members handle requests for films and aid teachers in showing them. Bob BeUold “runs” the films to the post office each evening. TOP ROW: T. McCumber, J. Irwin, D. Industrial Arts is a practical field designed for everyday living. Students taking the course have found diat it can also be technical and exacting. Coursework includes a great variety ol subjects from metal working to electronics and trom woodworking projects to architectural drawing. Most students at Tuscola take a foreign language to learn the language and customs of other countries. More and more students are learning how useful and demanding these languages are as preparation for college entrance tests and college-scale work. Students of French classes attend lab sessions where they use microphones and tape recorders to develop the oral approach to language. The English department seeks to instill in each student respect for ideas and beliefs contrary to his own. It is hoped that he will come to a better understanding of himself and will progress in the development of his personality. Mrs. Rupnow’s newest collection of paperbacks commands much attention from juniors. Mark Seip flips through page after page of material as he develops his speed reading skill. Senior English classes study the history of the language through individual study groups. 73 Experimentation Increases Understanding CHEMISTRY EARTH SCIENCE ADVANCED BIOLOGY In order to satisfy the individual student’s needs, a variety of courses and sections were offered this year. Math Challenges Student Intellect Mrs. Miles’ senior math students develop computational skills and understanding of mathematical principles, but also develop an appreciation of the contribution which mathematics has made to everyday living. Preparation for Future Homemaking Self development and community service as they apply to the life of an individual area are stressed in Home Economics classes. The department seeks to develop students who are poised and efficient in carrying on homemaking responsibilities, who understand the importance of conserving food, clothing, household materials, money, time, and energy, and who know how to apply these understandings to daily living.
