THE TUSCOLIAN I960 Published by THE SENIOR CLASS of TUSCOLA COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL Tuscola, Illinois The clock of life is wound but once. And no man has the power To tell just when the hands will stop At late or early hour. Now is the only time we own. Love - live - toil with a will. DEDICATION The Class of 1960 dedicates the 1960 TUSCOLIAN to the memory of Miss Anna Mae Cruise, who lost her life in the summer of 1959, while on a European tour. Miss Cruise taught at T.C.H.S. for a period of two years. During that time we learned to know her, not only as a teacher, but as a friend. We miss her, but the memory of this friendship will long remain in our hearts. FACULTY J. H. HAMMACK Unit Superintendent CHARLES B. WHALEN High School Principal ESTHER KENNEDY Social Science G. E. CLASS HISTORY In the year 1956, the Freshman Class entered high school with visions of sitting on fountains and walking back to town from a nice ride into the country. Most of us were saved, though, as a new ruling against initiation was put into effect. We were guided through our Freshman year by our advisors, who were Mrs. Scott and Mr. Butkovich. The representatives of the eighty-seven members in our class were Steve Allison, President; Jim Perry, Vice-President; Mike Lemna, Secretary; Donna Hausmann, Treasurer; and Curt Turner, Student Council Representative. That year, much to our delight, we gained a new student, Bob Embser. Much to our dismay, we lost Sally Conley, Kathy Cain, Carole Carico, and Sandra Hill. The first major project of our high school years was the homecoming float, “Light the Way to Victory.” We were all surprised and amazed when we received second place. We entered as Sophomores with confidence and knowledge gained from the preceding year. Through the loss of Jim Kirby, Jean Shanks, Louise Botts, and Carolyn Martin, our enrollment dropped to eighty-two students. With the addition of Betty Dickey, our enrollment became eighty-three members. Our leaders were Phil Morris, President; Jerry Thompson, Vice-President; Christine Moore, Secretary; Adele Dotson, Treasurer; and Larry Owen, Student Council Representative. Our advisors were Mr. Schrader and Mr. Lionberger. At Homecoming, our class worked hard on the float “Win-Dy Game,” which was winner of second place. We made it! We were now upper classmen and had a grand total of eighty members left to help the administrators run the school. The only new member to help us with this great task was Steve Wright. We had to bid farewell to Donna Boomershine, Reta Perry, Nancy Kirchner, and La Donna Supancic. We elected Carter Morris, President; Adele Dotson, Vice-President; Christine Moore, Secretary; Lynne McCartney, Treasurer; and Curt Turner, Student Council Representative. We were kept busy by the magazine sales, the Junior Class Play, “Come Out of the Closet,” and giving the departing Seniors a reception and prom on April 25, 1959. The theme was Bali Hai with music by Bob Norman and his orchestra. We were helped through our busiest year by our advisors, Mr. Schrader and Mr. Lionberger. We reached the summit of high school life, as full-fledged Seniors. Our class totaled seventy-three members and for our last year in high school, we had with us Lee Mardis and Janice Barger. During the summer, we lost Anita Stevens, Connie Leger, Paul Jewel and Steve Wright. Our Homecoming will always be remembered not only as our last one, but also because we beat our opponents, Villa Grove, and won first place with our float “Roaring to Victory.” Our activities this past year included the Senior Class play, “Our Town,” directed by Mr. Cain, the reception and prom which was given to us by the Junior Class, our Senior Skip Day, and the Yearbook, which you are now reading. Carter Morris, President; Craig Wyatt, Vice-President; Christine Moore, Secretary; Betty Dickey, Treasurer; and Joyce Reeder, Student Council Representative were our class officers. Our advisors were Mr. Schrader, Mr. Lionberger, and Mrs. Allen. We shall always remember Baccalaureate, which was held on May 22, and Commencement, held on May 26, as a fitting close to our high school days. THIRD PLACE F. H. A. FIRST PLACE Senior Class SECOND PLACE Junior Class CLASS PROPHECY Report Number - 1960-TCHS-1985 Subject - Reception of General Craig W. Wyatt as Commandant of the United States Air Force Academy. This official record was kept by General Wyatt’s private secretary, 1st Lieutenant Jo Lena Bartley. The official reception of General Craig W. Wyatt as Commandant of the U. S. Air Force Academy was held on the evening of January 20, 1985, at the Officers Club of the Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Catering the affair was America’s most famous Female Restaurateur, Carolee Mayhall, assisted by her business manager and millionaire husband, Buddy Archibald. Flowers were furnished by Steve Kyle of Petunia Growers, Inc. Favors were provided by the Mad-Fad Shoppe of Janice Barbee and Pat F roman. Julius Kropp, the world’s greatest drummer, accompanied Dan Rutan in the reading of his latest classic, “Ode on a Banana Peel.” The former Lynne McCartney spent the Evening playing the oboe under the direction of her band-leader husband. Joyce Reeder gave one of her usual rattling readings. The new John Coleman of WCIA, Steve Allison, introduced the spotlight dancers, Virginia and Mike Browning. Peggy Pettitt was supposed to entertain, but her contract with Ringling Bros, would not permit it. Joy Jones, Sandy Perrin, Nancy Dallas, and Sandra Primmer, upon request, did their famous Can-Can from the Khrushchev Ballet of Russia. As other entertainment, Betty Dickey played the piano she used in her concert for Ex-President Nixon, and then accompanied the famous Metropolitan Opera star, Judy Moore, in her rendition of the Battle of Kookamonga. Jim Wiesener and Carol Kleiss portrayed the “before and after” of her new invention, “Fatso Fudgies” diet pills. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Thompson (the former Francine Ferchow) flew in from Cape Canaveral, Florida, where he is a draftsman. It seems Jerry was recently volunteered by his wife to make the first trip to the moon. Famous dentist and false tooth expert, Mort Cunningham, was greeted by Purdue’s Golden Girl, Carol Bass. Dick Chapman and Jerry Krallman showed up with black eyes from their latest bout. Mardi Gras Queen, Adele Dotson, attended with English-Channel swimmer, Carolyn Jackson. Pattie Powell had just returned from visiting with Fidel Castro--AGAIN. Alice Randall and Frances McNeely lit Gary Holmes foot-long cigar as they passed through with the Olympic Torch. Switchboard operator, Patty Breen, ran in with a “Call for Philip Morris.” Mary Frances Ard walked in with a plate of her famous Hors D’Oeuvres. Mrs. America 1985, Nancy Kappes, was accompanied by the present Charles Atlas, Jim Perry. Donna Hausmann was wearing the crown she received as Queen of the 1959 Homecoming. Madame Elina Laughlin and Monsieur Mike Lemna of the Coiffure Salon of Paris were there with their registered French poodles and trainer, Oscar Zane. Dr. Patricia Thompson, Chief-of-Staff at the Mayo Clinic, and her head nurse, Kay Sodaro, came to the rescue when Jim Waugh slipped on a certain banana peel. Carolyn Brewer and Dennis Schaefer had just returned from the trip around-the-world in six hours, which they won by writing the now famous jingle for Toastie-Woastie Instant Bread, owned by none other than Helen Scheu. Jerry Jolley and George Lansky, Mayor and Chief-of-Police of Ottville (East Tuscola), brought their candle-lighter, Judy Brinkley, and town-crier, Karen Little. Carl Rideout had found some time in the midst of the busy harvest season at his peanut plantation to attend the reception along with his chief peanut planter, Larry Owen. It was learned that Bob Marrs would be unable to attend. He is still waiting in front of Hall’s Jewelry for his tackle trophy to be inscribed. Candy Hooker came on stilts. The next guest announced was Carter Morris, who has recently finished (for good) the lead in “Our Town . Harold Clarkson, President of the Carry-Out-Boys Union, attended with his wife. Lois Nelson, chief money-changer at Grab-It-Here. Monte Froman, who has been promoted to Head Ticket-Taker at the Strand, was seen talking to Skip Ziegler, who has replaced him in the popcorn booth. Also seen were Curt Turner, Bob Vukelich, and Bernie Stabler, the three leading scorers on the newly-formed basketball team, the Hugo Hustlers. Dean Bliss, who has now advanced to President of the Skulls Car Club, arrived in his 1985 Corvette, driven by his lady chauffeur, Lee Mardis. Dean told us that Art Moss could not make the reception; he is still working on his physics problems under the tutorage of Mr. Meyer. Christine Moore, Bob Embser, and Jean Jolley were the only class members of General Wyatt not seen or heard of at the reception.
