CLASS HISTORY In August of 1955, the Senior Class of 1959, entered TCHS as green freshmen. Many of us anticipated high school, but a few of us were a little fearful. As our leaders we chose Kenny Snyder, President; Jim McCumber, Vice-President; Sibyl Igo, Secretary; Jane Hanson, Treasurer; Janet Abney, Student Council Representative; and Bob Beasley, Annual Staff Member. Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Busse were our class advisers. Our first project as a class was a homecoming float, A Monstrous Victory. which was not too successful. Our class membership was increased when Mary Jane Short joined us. As Sophomores we were a little more confident and began to get into the swing of activities. We elected Bob Beasley, President; Bob Travis, Vice-President; Viola Yoder, Secretary; Judy McCumber, Treasurer; Janet Abney, Student Council Representative as our leaders. Our advisers were Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Schrader. We worked extra hard on our homecoming float, Victory or Bust, to make up for the year before. Some of us were able to show our acting ability in the Freshman-Sophomore play, Brain Storm. Jeanne Alexander was one of our new members. Our Junior year was full of events, excitement, and fun. We were successfully guided by Bob Beasley, President; Jim Mann, Vice-President; Jean Thomas, Secretary; Sibyl Igo, Treasurer; and Janet Abney, Student Council Representative. Our very capable advisers were Miss Dickinson and Mr. But-kovich. Our homecoming float, We Oc-Tu-Pus 'Em Back, tied for third place. We had finally made the grade! In November the whole school had a red letter day. We moved into the new high school with books, desks, and new enthusiasm. The Junior Class Play, Glamour Boy , was presented on December 5, 1957, under the direction of Mrs. Wall. The magazine sale proved quite successful as did all of our fund raising activities. With splendid co-operation from everyone we were able to give one of the nicest Junior-Senior proms TCHS had ever seen. The theme was Southern Ball and as we entered the Community Building on April 26, 1958, we truly stepped into the midst of an old Southern plantation. After an evening of dancing to Billy William's orchestra, we were entertained with a free show and a pre-dawn breakfast. Our Senior year probably will be the most cherished by us. To guide us through our last year we chose Bob Beasley, President; Ronnie Colwell, Vice-President; Virginia Wilson, Secretary; Jane Kellogg, Treasurer; and Janet Abney, Student Council Representative. Our advisers were again Miss Dickinson and Mr. Butkovich. Our football team gained a victory for us against Unity to make Homecoming truly a glorious event with Virginia Wilson and Bob Beasley being chosen queen and king by the student body. Our homecoming float, We’re Expecting A Victory, won second place. The Senior Class Play The Heiress, was given in May under the direction of Mr. Cain. It was an outstanding success. Senior Skip Day also was enjoyed in May. Baccalaureate and Commencement services on May 24 and 26 were a fitting conclusion to our high school days at TCHS. Today I attended a reunion for the TCHS Class of '59, held at the estate of oil tycoon, Curt Pulley. I was really surprised at the change that's come over my classmates in the last ten years. For instance, you remember what a shapely lass Jane Kellogg was in high school. Well, Jane has just been named Miss Drainpipe of 1969 by the Plumbers' Union. Curt gave us a lavish meal at noon. Grace was said by Rev. Bob Utterback. After we ate, we all sat around and talked about our present-day life. A few of my former classmates have joined the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Myrna Lynn Baker is a trapeze artist and Joe Fortna does a death-defying dive from a 70 foot tower into a thimble of Hadacol. Sharon Owen is shot from a cannon as a human cannonball. You remember that Joyce Smith was a tall girl in high school. She is now working as center pole to hold up the midget tent. The sports’ world has been the road to success for several of the '59ers. Sandra Wallace, world faYnous skin diver, was the first to swim under the ice at the North Pole. Pat Shanahan is a world's champion fighter who has lost only one bout during his career(to Carter Morris). Carolyn Spencer and Darlene VonLanken are doing well on T. V. as a ladies wrestling team. Because of all his experience in high school, Dick Perrin is working as manager for the Chicago Bears. Jim Leger is a world-famous jockey now. He rode the winning horse in last year's Kentucky Derby. Our own Olympic runner, Linda Bailey, set a new world's record as she ran all the way around Jackie Gleason in eleven seconds. Max Schnorf, winner of the last Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, was unable to attend the reunion because of injuries resulting from a collision with Lorena Cunningham on her motorcycle. Lorena was working as a State Patrolwoman. Sharon Cassiday is the star center for the famous Amazons, women's basketball team. Don Red Forsyth is working as head coach at Hugo Tech. His wife, the former Sue Riddle, a Home Economics teacher at Hugo High, is owner of the Riddle Frozen Cherry Pie Company, Shir lee Jenks is employed on a dude ranch in Texas. She’s one of the most famous rodeo stars in the state. Tom Shaffer is a big game hunter. So far he has captured MONOPOLY, BOOM OR BUST, CLUE, and SORRY. Bob Mendell was at the reunion, but we hardly recognized him. He had a glorious tan and he kept jabbering in some foreign tongue. Later I found out that the reason for his strange behavior was due to his being Good Will Ambassador to the Mau Mau Tribes in Africa. The field of music has drawn the attention of many of my classmates. Sharon Morris is a bubble dancer for the F.B.I. Viola Yoder is the head of a vocal group which performs on the National Barn Dance. They are known as Yoder’s Yodelers.” Donna Reese, famous recording star, has just released a new album called “Music to Shut off the RecordPlayer By. Nancy Owen is a member of the famous New York dance troupe, the Rockettes. Jim Mann is working as drillmaster for the Michigan State Precision Marching Band. Mary J ane Short is head majorette of that band. J ean Thomas’ musical experience in high school really paid off for her. She is a guitarist in a rock n roll band in Memphis, Tennessee. John Lloyd is the star of the world-known Ballet Russe. John got his start in die 1958 Homecoming Pep Assembly. Chuck Stephens is now the conductor of die Boston Pops Orchestra. A few of the gang have stayed here in Tuscola. Gary Chaplin is doing well in the Jackson-Chaplin Iron and Steel business. His wife, Carolyn, irons and Gary steals. Ronnie Colwell is head of his own garbage truck force. DonHolsteowns Klean-RiteCleaners. His business is expanding, for he now has a branch cleaning plant in Villa Grove. (They clean branches.) Jeanne Alexander is his head presser. (She presses heads.) Jerry Gunner” Taylor is the head of the Law and Order Committee in Tuscola. Stephanie Smith is head curb girl at King’s Kastle. Because Claud Cox grew so fond of his Studebaker while he was in High School, he is now the owner of the Studebaker Garage. I suppose you remember how many boy-friends Sibyl Igo had in high schooL Well, she is now President of the Lonely Hearts Club. However, she still receives cashmere sweaters from some of her old determined admirers. Some of my more talented classmates are working in T. V. and motion pictures. You may have seen Larry Kirchner in his famous T. V. commercial Look Ma, no teeth. Aren't you glad we changed to acid? Judy and Jet McCumber are in the T. V. commercial Which Twin Has the Toni? Kenny Snyder is now employed at M. G. M. Studios in Hollywood as head hairstylist. He got his start on Yul Brynner. Jim Pohlig models for the advertisement I Was a 90 Pound Weakling. Jim is the before model. Myra Edwards plays the part of the Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz because of her effective laugh. Since Marjorie Main retired from the movies, Jo Anne Lasseter is playing the role of Ma Kettle. John Shelton is a big Broadway success. He made his debut as an undertaker in Fancy Derringer. Some of the guests traveled a great distance to be with us again. Bob Travis brought along some of his harem from Saudi Areola so he wouldn't get too lonesome. Cliff Burmeister is the sewer inspector for New York City. I guess he is usually knee deep in work. Barbara Consoer is a member of Mickey Cohen's gang in the Chicago underworld. Because of all her practice on the busy streets of Tuscola, she drives the get-away car for the gang. Jim Hilligoss is the head bartender at Romanoff's in New York. He also got his start in Fancy Derringer. Shorty Schoen is an English Professor at Harvard. Blaine Benner is a girls' P. E. Instructor at Lindenwood College. Larry Brewer is scaling fish along the Japanese waterfront. Shirley Humphreys is head instructor in the Patricia Stevens Charm School. She is working in the poise department. One of her famous paintings is now hanging in Smithsonian Institute called A Polar Bear in a Snow Storm Eating Popcorn. Anita Dinsmore is writing an advice-to-the-lovelorn column in the Ficklin Times. Boots Goodwin's quiet manner got her a job ashead librarian in the Chicken Bristle Municipal Library. Still more of my friends are top executives in the business world. Janet Abney is the head of the Abmobile Emergency Equipment Company which designs icy road kits consisting of shovels, picks, flashlights, coats, and walking boots for road mishaps. Phyllis Turner and Sandy Ellis are co-owners of the T and E Trucking Firm. Their motto is You call, we haul, you all. Joanne Baker is a girdle designer. Dave Gardner, helium balloon tycoon, manufactures balloons that won't float away. Coalby Coffey is head executive of the Coalby Patch Bandage Company. Bob Beasley sure has changed since he was in high school. I didn't see much of him all day because he was too bashful to come out of the bushes. One of his old friends, Sue Carnine.told me that he was in the banana business. His motto is Go Munch on a Bunch for Lunch. Speaking of Sue Carnine, she is now very quiet and reserved. She is owner of a funeral parlor in Dodge City. Her motto is I Dig You the Most. All evening she was promoting her new lay-away plan. I don’t know exactly what Sydney Layman's occupation is, but I heard that she won the Southern Illinois Hog Calling Contest. Charlotte Welborn is now driving a bulldozer for the Camargo Construction Company. Jim Baird, owner of several farms, is also Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Illinois.
