CLASS HISTORY In Tuscola in the year of 1955, I, the Senior Class of 1958, was graduated from the eighth grade, and in September of the same year, I entered High School. Yes, to be sure, I was a “Freshie,” young, foolish, green, and ignorant. At that time, I was quite fresh, and everything, including the assembly and the upper classmen, assumed a vast importance. Since then, I have learned that upper classmen are mere human beings, and the assembly has shrunk to normal size. At the beginning of my Freshman year, I had eighty-seven members. Many ranked high in scholarship and participated in football, basketball, track, dramatics, music, and clubs. I was successfully guided by Cliff Green as President; Jerry Norris, Vice-President; Gaila Grubb, Secretary-Treasurer; and Linda Kennedy, Student Council Representative. The class sponsors were Mr. Maloney and Mr. Gilpin. The ability of my members was shown in the Homecoming float, portraying the idea, “A Whale of A Victory, ’ which won first prize in the Homecoming parade. At the beginning of my Sophomore year, my enrollment had dropped to seventy-eight members. That year I was under the leadership of Jim Henning as President; Rita Kleiss, Vice-President; Barbara Schulz, Secretary-Treasurer; Cliff Green, Student Council Representative; andEarlene Ohlsen, Annual Staff Member. The class sponsors were Mr. Jordan and Mr. Maloney. This year, having had a year’s training, more of my members were active on the football and basketball teams. Many more became members of the band. At Homecoming, all Sophomores worked hard on the float, “Just Bear Facts, We’ll Beat Em,” which was winner of second prize. A Freshman-Sophomore play, “Brain Storm,” was given under the direction of Mrs. Mary Jones. Seventy-three members survived to begin my Junior year. My leader was Jerry Norris and his helpers were Cliff Green, Earlene Ohlsen, Arline Soards, and Joyce Firestone. The advisors were Mrs. Allen and Mr. Hudson. Although I didn’t win a prize in the Homecoming parade, everyone worked hard on my float, “We’ll Chew ‘Em Up.” This was my big year and there were three big social functions. First of all were the magazine sales and then my members were given a chance to show their acting ability in the Junior Class Play, “Act Your Age,” under the direction of Reverend Jack Jones. The main event was the Junior-Senior Reception and Prom at the new Community Building on May 11. The theme was “Mystic Moments” with music by the orchestra of Wayne Karr. I am now reaching the goal. This past year, Elmer Lash has successfully acted as President; Dale Kerns, Vice-President; Betty Bartley, Secretary; Linda Burress, Treasurer; and Linda Kennedy as Student Council Representative. Mrs. Kennedy and Miss Brown were my sponsors. The Senior play, “Dino,” was given under the direction of Miss Brown. Senior Skip Day was held in May. This was a glorious farewell after four successful years. The highlights of my high school days were centered around Baccalaureate and Commencement on May 26 and 28. Thus ended my high school days and I, the Class of 1958, am the first class to be graduated from the new High School. Linda Kennedy
