IN MEMORIAM As we receive our diplomas this year, we will remember our classmate, Francis Cler. We shall never forget Bud s happy smile which made our school days seem brighter. We have missed you, but we know you rest now, forever in the shelter and peace of God who saw fit to take you from us. CLASS HISTORY In Tuscola in the year of 1955, I, the Senior Class of 1958, was graduated from the eighth grade, and in September of the same year, I entered High School. Yes, to be sure, I was a “Freshie,” young, foolish, green, and ignorant. At that time, I was quite fresh, and everything, including the assembly and the upper classmen, assumed a vast importance. Since then, I have learned that upper classmen are mere human beings, and the assembly has shrunk to normal size. At the beginning of my Freshman year, I had eighty-seven members. Many ranked high in scholarship and participated in football, basketball, track, dramatics, music, and clubs. I was successfully guided by Cliff Green as President; Jerry Norris, Vice-President; Gaila Grubb, Secretary-Treasurer; and Linda Kennedy, Student Council Representative. The class sponsors were Mr. Maloney and Mr. Gilpin. The ability of my members was shown in the Homecoming float, portraying the idea, “A Whale of A Victory, ’ which won first prize in the Homecoming parade. At the beginning of my Sophomore year, my enrollment had dropped to seventy-eight members. That year I was under the leadership of Jim Henning as President; Rita Kleiss, Vice-President; Barbara Schulz, Secretary-Treasurer; Cliff Green, Student Council Representative; andEarlene Ohlsen, Annual Staff Member. The class sponsors were Mr. Jordan and Mr. Maloney. This year, having had a year’s training, more of my members were active on the football and basketball teams. Many more became members of the band. At Homecoming, all Sophomores worked hard on the float, “Just Bear Facts, We’ll Beat Em,” which was winner of second prize. A Freshman-Sophomore play, “Brain Storm,” was given under the direction of Mrs. Mary Jones. Seventy-three members survived to begin my Junior year. My leader was Jerry Norris and his helpers were Cliff Green, Earlene Ohlsen, Arline Soards, and Joyce Firestone. The advisors were Mrs. Allen and Mr. Hudson. Although I didn’t win a prize in the Homecoming parade, everyone worked hard on my float, “We’ll Chew ‘Em Up.” This was my big year and there were three big social functions. First of all were the magazine sales and then my members were given a chance to show their acting ability in the Junior Class Play, “Act Your Age,” under the direction of Reverend Jack Jones. The main event was the Junior-Senior Reception and Prom at the new Community Building on May 11. The theme was “Mystic Moments” with music by the orchestra of Wayne Karr. I am now reaching the goal. This past year, Elmer Lash has successfully acted as President; Dale Kerns, Vice-President; Betty Bartley, Secretary; Linda Burress, Treasurer; and Linda Kennedy as Student Council Representative. Mrs. Kennedy and Miss Brown were my sponsors. The Senior play, “Dino,” was given under the direction of Miss Brown. Senior Skip Day was held in May. This was a glorious farewell after four successful years. The highlights of my high school days were centered around Baccalaureate and Commencement on May 26 and 28. Thus ended my high school days and I, the Class of 1958, am the first class to be graduated from the new High School. AROUND THE WORLD IN IS Dear Diary, Today I finally received my letter from the Lonely Hearts Club. Dm leaving tomorrow to meet my one and only Ezra P. Muffinpot. Bright and early Monday morning at 9 o‘clock, I left Tuscola for San Francisco, California, on the Super Colossal Highway in my atomic-powered sputmobilc. When I reached New York, I decided to see the sights. My first stop was the U. N. Building where I met the presiding president, Jerry Norris. He introduced me to one of my old classmates, Donna “Frenchy” Buchanan, who is the French interpreter. After leaving the U. N. I sped along the Dale Kerns Turnpike, named by Martin Kropp, the Executive Director of the American Association of Atomic-Powered Automobile Accidents, (the A.A.A.A.A.). I passed Radio City, where I saw advertised on the marquee, “Trouser Tag, ’ which I presumed was a sequel to“PajamaGame,”starring Carolyn Miller and Willie Flanigan. I thought I would pick up a couple of high velocity space helmets for Ezra’s and my honeymoon at Dallas’, a famous New York Department store owned by Sharon and Patty Dallas. Since I couldn’t find a place to park, I called Cooper the Copper. Jerry consented to pilot my Sputmobile around Staten Island while I did my shopping. As I started to leave, I asked myself why I was in New York. I concluded that I had gotten on the wrong one-way thoroughfare and I would have to go “Around the World. The next stop on my itinerary was Greenland. As fate would have it, I arrived in time to see the annual dog team races, among whose entries were those of Elmer Lash, who lashed his way to victory over Darrell Stenger, who was stunned by the defeat. The officiating was done by Cliff Green, American diplomat, for whom the island was named. My next stop was London, so I decided to see the sights. First I hired a guide, Nadine Cassiday, who took me to Buckingham Palace. The keeper of the arsenal was none other than Arline Soards. Jim Teeters was tottering on the edge of the walk, watching Big Ben tick off the seconds. While crossing the English Channel for Paris, whom should I see but Mary Jane Jackson, Jane Ann Wright, Bill McFadyen, and Carvey Ready setting an all-time swimmers’ endurance record. The first sight in Paris was a fashion show. The models ere the four Mademoiselles, Barbara McNeely, Betty Mackey, Bethelann Mannin, and Charlene Martin. The styles were famous space-travel creations designed by Monsieur Albert Heacock. Since I had never skied, I though I would land in the Swiss Alps long enough to try it. The famous Benner Team of Tom and Wayne were winning all the winter sports events. What’s that I hear? Fred Ross, famous Swiss Yodelcr, was on the mountain-top yodelling to his flock of goats. While visiting thr ruins of Rome, I stopped by the Colosseum. And there was Susan Mitchell and her wonder dog Schnitzel practicing for her afternoon performance! I didn’t have the heart to tell her that there would be no audience, for Rome was in ruins. The next stop was Madrid, where 1 arrived just in time to sec the afternoon bull fight. The matador, Ronald Morris, was receiving ovations and roses from Senorita Rita Kleiss. Senorita Betty Bartley was selling her own style of hot tamales to the huge crowd. In Egypt, I was introduced to Wayne Huber's harem dancers, Sharon Conner, Mary Gee, Charlene Hall, Mary Ann Baker, and Sharon Zane. Next I saw a pyramid which was being constructed by the Henning and Henderson Corporation. Whom should I see inside but Barbara McCartney, the interior decorator! It was in Africa that I saw my old friend. Linda Wagner, training elephants, and my friend Harold Weatherford -- a snake charmer. Meanwhile back in the jui le, James Mefford and his Ubangi princesses, Charlotte McCroskey, Evelyn Utterback, and Joan Ziegler were whooping it up. During my visit to Russia, I visited Moscow University where I saw Linda Warren, head of the University. As I passed through the streets, I saw the Harriss and Harris Wrestling Troupe starring Nancy Ann and Charles. Then I saw the stand where diamonds were being sold by the “Hot Rock kid, Joyce Firestone. I found I was getting hungry so I stopped at the Ohlsen and Ostendorf Delicatessen to buy some Grubb Goulash. Next stop was Japan and to my great surprise, I encountered Joyce Bozarth and Linda Burress who were operating the ‘Ricksha Taxi Company. They took me in a ‘Ricksha to the laundry of Linda Albin. Business was booming and one of her best customers was Larry Abney, who was a millionaire manufacturer of chopsticks. On the beach of Waikiki I saw Linda Kennedy, Myra Nowning, and Carol Rahn, famous hula dancers, swaying in the breeze. Next stop was home and I met my one and only, Ezra P. Muffinpot. My darling took me to Disneyland where I saw Larry Phillips selling oranges from his Citrus Fruit Ranch, Artie Huser working as maintenance man on the Alice in Wonderland ride, Joanne Brewer and Sue Buchanan selling Mickey Mouse Ears, and Barbara Lossman acting as stewardess on the rocket to the moon. The we went to MGM studios where we saw Duane Dunn, writer, producer, and director of his new detective movie “DUNN DA DUNN DUNN ’, Betty Smith, starring in “EVELYN EVENINGMOON’’and Judy Randolph, notorious gossip columnist. Then we went to be married, with Phyllis Cler and Curtis McDaniel, heads of the Lonely Hearts Club, as our witnesses. This was the perfect ending to a perfect trip.
