Approximately seventy Freshmen opened the doors and entered the halls of’ole TCHS and tried to act unconcerned and grown up. but we couldn’t hide it, we were as green as they come. It wasn’t long before we began to venture into a wider field of activities. For example, many joined the clubs and many of the boys took part in football, basketball and track. We chose Bob Smith as our Class President; Nancy Schrader, Vice President; Janet Nichols, Secretary-Treasurer; and Junior Decker, Student Council Representative. Our class advisors were Miss Deer and Mr. Wilt. Attheend of the year we had a picnic at Ervin Park with a treasure hunt as entertainment. Our Sophomore year wasn’t quite as new to us but just as interesting and we weren’t green anymore, or so we thought. We elected Carl Quinn as President; Tom Atwell, Vice President; Shirley McMorris, Secretary-Treasurer; and Bob Smith, student Council Representative. Our advisors were Mr. Durland and Mr. Schrader. As Juniors we became upper classmen, with Janet Nichols as President; Shirley McMorris, Vice President; Shirley Weatherford, Secretary-Treasurer; and Tom Atwell, Student Council Representative. Miss Brown and Mr. Roll were our class advisors. This year was the year we had to earn money and plenty of it. So we began to struggle by picking up corn, selling magazine subscriptions and presenting our class play, entitled Take Care of My Little Girl,” under the direction of Miss Brown. Then on the evening of May 23 at approximately six o’clock, came the big moment--the Junior Senior Reception and Prom. The theme used was April in Paris.” It was a beautiful Prom. During this year we lost a real friend, Mr. Guy R. Collins, but we gained another in Mr. Hammack, our new school superintendent. At lastl We’re Seniors! This year became both a happy one and a sad one. To realize we were Seniors made us very happy, but we also realized that it would soon be over for us at ’ole TCHS. Our President was Leroy Harting, with Ed Madix as Vice President; Sally Lewis as Secretary-Treasurer and Bud Burress as Student Council Representative. Miss Magnusson and Miss Sluss were our class advisors, and with their help we were able to put out an entirely different type of TUSCOLIAN. The day we looked forward to for four years finally came on May 12, when we all enjoyed our Senior Skip Day at Turkey Run State Park. Our class play entitled “No More Homework” was a big success when it was presented before a good crowd on April 22. The Junior Senior Reception and Prom on May 15 was a gala occasion as it always is. On May 23, Baccalaureate was held in the high school auditorium and May 28, the members of the Class of 1954 received their diplomas. Thus we closed the door on the halls of TCHS. Mary Jane Henning CLASS PROPHECY Two weeks ago was May 1, 1964. That was the day I, Pat Hausmann, started on my trip to New Orleans. My girl friend, Susie Schultz and I had been saving our money and we had decided to spend it on this trip. I have been working as secretary to the president of the National Petrochemical Corporation and Susie teaches the second grade at the North Ward Grade School. That evening we stopped at Cairo, Illinois, to eat lunch. We went into the Bluebird Cafe and sat down, and whom should we see but Theo Houser. He was dressed in a white chefs hat and apron. Every one says he is the best cook for miles around. After we had finished eating we continued on our journey. We stopped at a gas station operated by John and Joe Harris. It seems that they have a very profitable business. We arrived in New Orleans on May 3, about 7:00 a.m. The first thing we did was to find a hotel. Since we were being reckless with our money, we decided to stay at the Roosevelt. Besides, one of our old school friends, Carl Quinn was the manager. His wife, the former Shirley McMorris, made a very charming hostess. After we were shown to our rooms and rested for awhile, we went out to breakfast. No sooner has we sat down than who should join us but Keith Thodel He told us that he was the business manager of New Orleans’ biggest and most beautiful showboat--the River Queen. He also told us that Charles Dotson was captain of the boat and gave us an invitation to come aboard. As we were planning to visit the old F rench quarter that night, we decided that we would go to see Charles the next evening. The French quarter was all that we had heard--and morel First, we went to the Casino Club. The floor show was marvelous and who was the star of the show—Loretta HilligossI She has changed her name to Bubble LaRue. She told us that she had been married three times and was thinking about a fourth husband. The next place wewentwastheClubParee. The owner of this night club was Howard Thomas. He is now married to Nancy Schrader, who is also the star in the floor show. Her specialty is the French Cat Dance. I must say she really has talent. While we were making our way through the narrow street, we bumped into Eddie Lazzell and Larry Boylson. They, like ourselves, were taking a vacation and really seeing the town. We decided that we would all go together to see the River Queen and have a real party. Golly what a night!!! I never saw such a beautiful place in all my life. When we arrived, Captain Dotson came out to meet us and showed us all around the boat. We were very much surprised to learn that a great number of our former classmates worked aboard the River Queen. Russell Ingrum was the star comedian of the show and Clarice Ullrich and Harold Pankau were a famous dancing team. There were also some of our girl friends in the chorus line--Mary Jane Henning, Ruth Pribble, Tiana Riley, and Jean Cornwell. We were also glad to see Tom Atwell and his Dixieland Band. Wayne Lester did a special number on his cornet. While we were listening, Sally Lewis, the club photographer, came to take our picture. In the day time she works in a lawyer’s office. The next night we went to a dance in the Blue Room of our hotel. Larry Williams was there with his Orchestra, and his vocalist was none other than Elva Hawkins. The Blue Room was just like its name—BLUE! One of the special numbers was the Bunny Hop. Misfortune came upon us though, when Susie tripped and sprained her ankle. The hotel doctor came to our assistance and we were surprised to see that he was Bob Smith. The next morning Susie was able to walk, so we decided to visit the museum and try to absorb some culture. When we reached the museum, we found that the guide was Larry Kresin. We learned that he is now married to Beverly Lecher, who is a nurse in the city hospital. As we went through the art section of the museum, we noticed that the name of Marjorie King appeared under several of the paintings. She has certainly made a name for herself in the art world. As we were leaving, we met Jannie Nichols and Phyllis Wetzel. They told us that they were both secretaries for the J. C. Pritchard Construction Company and had traveled all over the world. The company was now working on a large plant near New Orleans. That evening we decided to eat dinner at Antoine’s. As we were sitting there, in came Don Endsley and Leslie Wykoff. They told us that they had just been married and were spending their honeymoon in New Orleans. They are going to live on Don’s farm near Tuscola, and Leslie is going to give up her medical practice and stay home. After leaving Antoine’s we hailed a cab so that we might venture on to some other places. When the driver asked where we would like to go, we looked at one another in surprise for we knew the voice was that of someone we should know. It was Charles Breenl He told us that he had his own cab business. He wanted to know if we would like to stop and see his wife, Jan Lou Morris and their twin boys. We all agreed and finished the evening with a lovely visit with them. They told us that Jo Ann Fleming was going to star in the main event of the Ladies’ Wrestling Matches at the Dog-Bite Stadium. They gave us their tickets which they were unable to use. The next night we set out for the Stadium and the wrestling match. Jo Ann’s name was billed in bright lights across the marquee. “JO-JO THE TERRIBLE.’’ As we entered the stadium, we noticed that the man standing by the door was none other than Lowell Hill. He is the owner and operator of the Stadium, and he directed us to Jo Ann’s dressing room. There we learned that her manager was Mary Waters. Wehad quite a talk with them and came to the conclusion that wrestling is a very profitable business--if you can stand it! The match was very good and of course Jo Ann won. Her opponent was very angry and we almost saw another fight. As we were leaving the stadium we ran into four of our classmates. Max Warnes, Nancy Cler, Ronnie Schultz and Shirley Weatherford. Max is now an undertaker; Nancy is the editor of “Private Secretary.” Shirley is a teacher at the ABC Commercial College, while Ronnie is the owner of a large cotton plantation near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We decided to get something to eat and ended up at the Hot Toddy Shop. To our surprise, this was owned by Leroy Harting. Two of his waitresses were Roseann Mayer and Jackie Wilson. We stayed until closing time and had a nice visit with all our friends. The next morning while eating breakfast and reading the New Orleans Daily Picayune we noticed that Bud Burress, owner of a large sugarcane plantation, was convalescing in the hospital after an appendectomy. On the Sports page of this paper was a photo of Junior Decker, left tackle for the Los Angeles Rams. We were pleased to hear that our friends were so successfuL That afternoon we decided to go to a movie, “Drums of the Congo starring Hildegarde Freche and Jim Barbee. When the newsreel came on, who should be the main attraction, but Eddie Madix. He had just come back from the Olympics in Paris, F ranee and was being honored as winner of the Marathon. Another of America’s entries was Don Willison. He was not so lucky as Eddie and came back defeated. The next day was the twelfth of May--the day we were to leave New Orleans and start out trip home. We were just checking out of the hotel, when someone in a ten-gallon hat and cowboy boots came up to us and said, “Hi ya gals, remember me?” We looked around and there stood Bill Stalter, another of our former classmates. He told us that the National Oil Company was having its convention in New Orleans and he was representing East Texas. As our time was short, we said good-bye to Bill and started across the street to our car. Just as we stepped off the curb, we were almost run down by a brand-new, purple Cadillac convertible. It stopped and when the door opened out stepped Ronnie Soards. He told us that he is Mayor of New Orleans and had come to welcome the delegates to the Oilmen’s Convention. He apologized for almost hitting us and invited us to his home for the weekend. We wanted to accept, but declined the invitation as our vacation was almost up and we had to be getting home. We arrived home yesterday. May 14. We had a wonderful time and had seen or heard about all of our former classmates of the ‘ ‘Class of ’54’.” Pat Hausmann Susie Schultz Eddie Lazzell Larry Boylson NAME NICKNAME AMBITION PROBABLY WILL BE Tom Atwell T” A Bookie Second Mr. Roll Jim Barbee Ticker College In the Army Larry Boylson Crude Mad Scientist Mad Charles Breen Charlie Priest Altar Boy Carl Burress Bud F.
