There is a pair of shoes love wears and the coming is a mystery. There are explanations of love in all languages and not one found wiser than this: There is a place where love begins and a place where love ends — and love asks nothing. — Carl Sandburg Miss Debra Lenoir To fill a gap — Insert the thing that caused it. Block it up With other and ’twill yawn The more; You cannot solder an abyss With air. — Emily Dickinson 51 Miss Sharon Brooks Cheerfulness and content are great beautifiers and are fa- mous preservers of youthful looks. Charles Dickens Miss Anita McCrary There is no beautifier of complexion, or form, or behavior, like the wish to scatter joy and not pain around us. Ralph Waldo Emerson Miss Cathy Davis Happiness is as a butterfly, which when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you. Hawthorne Miss Wendy Daniels Dear Heavenly Father, far above ee Always protect the one I love. Panett To me he’s all I need to live And all the love I need he gives. And as long as I live on this earth today, Let him be around to show me the way. And even when the night grows nigh I close my eyes with one last sigh Wishing I could be with him, And in my dreams I see him dim. 53 Miss Debbie Crawford Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us. R. Smiles Miss Jane Medford The Heart is the capital of the mind, The Mind is a single state. The Heart and the Mind together make A single continent. One — is the population — Numerous enough. This ecstatic nation Seek — it is yourself. — Emily Dickinson Miss Cozette Overton They came to tell your faults to me, They named them over one by one; I laughed aloud when they were done, I knew them all so well before — Oh, they were blind, too blind to see Your faults had made me love you more. —Sara Teasdale 55 Ae os A e='100| (a a (@) 7a (@ ealfo4 a) el 74) (JD) aul 00) 72 ton OPN, LPs Miss Anita McCrary Miss Cathy Davis Oh! Once I had a little dog, the color it was brown. I taught him for to whistle, to sing, and dance and run. His legs, they were fourteen yards long His ears so very wide — And around the world in half a day Upon him I would ride. Miss Wendy Daniel The little things Are most worth-while A quiet word, A look, a smile, A listening ear That’s quick to share Another’s thoughts, Another’s care... Though sometimes they may seem Quite small, These little things Mean most of all. —Margaret Lindsey 57 Miss Debbie Crawford If I can stop one heart from breaking I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain. —Emily Dickinson Miss Kitty Barker Laugh and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone, For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth, But has trouble enough of its own. Sing, and the hills will answer, Sigh, it is lost on the air, The echoes bound to a joyful sound, But shrink from voicing care. —Ella Wilcox 7 Miss Lynn Tilley It is not a word spoken, Few words are said; Nor even a look of the eyes Nor a bend of the head, But only a hush of the heart That has too much to keep, Only memories waking that sleep so light a sleep. —Sara Teasdale Miss Marilynda Nease Build a little fence of trust Around today; Fill each space with loving work And therein stay; Look not through the sheltering bars Upon tomorrow, God will help thee bear what comes Of joy or sorrow. —Mary Butts bg Miss Nancy Dooly Gather the stars if you wish it so. Gather the songs and keep them. Gather the faces of women. Gather for keeping years and years. And then... But, what made it great? People did and that’s YOU!! 3 a3 see p? i if q : . 187 HES Sp es adie . 4 ql q : THE EDITORS’ LAST WORDS We the co-editors of the 1970-’71 Yearbook, leave to the student body this book as a symbolic record of the activities of you, the students of Tuscola. We hope that this book brings together all of your backgrounds, interests, hopes, desires, and adventures of the past year. Unfortunately, we regret that it was not possible for us to include all happenings and events that occurred, but we do hope that we have revealed a crossection of life at Tuscola. In doing this, we hope that we did not offend or leave out anyone or anything, and if we did so, we would now like to apologize to those whom it may concern. Composing a yearbook is not an easy thing to do. It requires many long hours of self-sacrifice and hard work. It is at this time that we would like to express our gratitude to all who contributed to this yearbook, whether they be our photographers, our staff, our wonderful sponsors; consisting of Miss Bessie Burch, Mr. Jake Brown, Mr. Harris Pryor, Mr. Dale Ratcliffe, and Mr. Wally Dunham, or the Administration, who generously gave their time and patience. We would like to give a special thanks to our business manager, Darlene Cagle, whose job was only the annual’s financial concern, but who gave many extra hours of time to help with the completion of this annual. To say the least, without her, we couldn’t have made it. To some, the class of 1971, this annual holds all the memories of a great year. Times to talk about, think about, laugh about, and yes, even cry about. Many will look back, thinking of Tuscola, and remember the great pride we all shared there. The spirit bonfire glows, ebbs, then dies as the class of ’71 leaves for colleges, jobs, and the future. They leave behind them a legacy. This fire of spirit still contains the spark and waits only to be rekindled by the class of ’72. This book records that fire — the spirit of the class of ’71 and we are glad that we are a part of it.
