SCHOOL -1- BOOSTING THE OLD HIGH SCHOOL Faithful and true hearted, Let us cheer our dear Old High, We revere her and defend her, And her colors proudly fly; We will stand for her united. Of her deeds we gladly tell. Her colors streaming. Glad faces beaming, So here's a cheer for her That we all love so well. Honors she has taken. On the track and with the ball. May she always rank the highest, May her colors never fall; There's no other that can match her, When her team is on the field, Her boys the fleetest. Her girls the sweetest. Then here's a cheer for her, For her who ne'er will yield. Joyous and ever loyal, Let us boost our dear Old High. Let every heart sing, Let every voice ring, There's no time to grieve or sigh. It's ever onward. Our course pursuing. May de feat ne'e r Our ardor cool. But united we will boost For her, our Old High School! -2- BOARD OF EDUCATION first Row: H.E. Groninger, A. L. Meloy, D. B. Increased opportunities for training are future reali- ties, but true achievement is a challenge which must be heralded henceforth to every boy and girl. We pay tribute to the members of our Board of Education be- cause of unselfish service rendered in behalf of those who fifty years hence aspire to look backward to accom- plishments made possible through the clear vision of those entrusted with authority and power to plan for posterity. -3- Ju cwtoxa Vxdley. Miyfi School WILLIAM V. QODSM ALL. PRINCIPAL PORT ROYAL PENNSYLVANIA. February 2b, 1945 Dear Class of '45: No matter how pleasant may have been the experiences of the past, the challenge of the days ahead presents to the youth of today, an opportunity for service to the nation and to mankind heretofore unknown. Be not disillusioned, however, as to the future. You dare not hope that it will be one free from discouragements and temptation. You will be called upon to aid in deciding the increasingly difficult problems which are chal- lenging the progress of civilization. Since making mistakes is a characteristic of mankind, you will be in error many times, but we are hopeful that the influences which have touched you in your school life may have been such that a repetition of mistakes will be rendered negligible. Whatever your path for the future may be, may it be clothed in the garments of honesty and noble purpose. That the life of each of you shall be a challenge to the best in future generations is my sincere wish. Sincerely, -4- FACULTY i First Row: Miss Hartman, Miss Simkins Miss MoCready, Miss Campbell Second Row: Mr. Parsons, Mr. Godshall, Mr. Gerhart r !Jr- GSds!;a“’ ou5 Principal, is graduate of Pennsylvania State 2 ; HS h?lds ? «achelor °f Science degree which he received in and a Master of Science degree which he received in 1941 His home town is Centre Hall Pa. Recently I was fortunate enough to take a tour through the United States, and here is the thing that is going to surprise you even as it did me then. Rare as it sounds, I met everyone of that class of 45” except you, our faculty adviser, and now I meet you by pen. Here was my trip ..................... While I was in Texas I saw Wayne Ewalt. He now is a cowboy on a large ranch there. Of course you remember James Sherlock; he is now supervising a great road contract in Florida. I went to a theatre in California and what do you know...there was Nelson Swartz as the comedian. While 1 was in California I also saw Letitia Wert, having just signed a contract with M. G. M. as star dancer for three years. In California I met Bradford Repner and his wife. He was making a painting of the Petrified Forests. Keba Ritzman is sole owner of a beautiful farm in Illinois. She is still set on a red head. Doris Koons is now married. She is living in Virginia. She has two of the cutest children. You should see them. Quite a few are still in Pennsylvania. Stanley Kilmer is private secretary to the Governor of Pennsylvania. Edmund Book and Carl McClure are farming in Juniata County. I was told they were the most successful farmers around there. Beatrice Boyer is married, and in her spare time she goes to a nursing center. -IB- Martha Peterson and Jane Maffett have proven their ability as successful house- wives . John Stitt is a machinery dealer. He is doing his part to help the farmers. Laird Gilson is still living in Port Royal running the dairy. As yet, Laird has not settled down. In New York there was Dorothy Boyer, now an accomplished business woman, out in her eyes...still that Gleam...for a certain Gene. Did you hear about Jean Shirk? She is the beautician for the Broadway Chorus girl. Kathryn Hertzler is now taking over the Kate Smith Hour. Tune in and see for yourself. Betty Meloy is that accomplished Maestro for which she has always dreamed. While visiting in the western states, there was Frank Hower supervising the National Lumber Company. Martha Yoder is now studying to be a Powers' model in New York. 1 hear she is leaving for the western states soon to join her husband Frank Hower. Benjamin Towsey is now a Pilot on a huge transport which makes daily trips from Philadelphia to Los Angeles. When I met Dorothy Fettig she told me she had quite a few experiences in civilian life, and has a steady job in a Philadelphia Bank. -19- HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 45 We entered Tuscarora Valley High School just four short years ago on September the Ninth, Nineteen hundred and forty-one. We numbered thirty eight shy and bashful Freshmen. The strange faces soon became familiar ones, and we all, after some difficulty, became accustomed to the routine of High School life. After a few weeks had passed, we elected the following officers to pilot our class for the first year: President, Frank Henry Hower; Secretary, Martha Yoder; Treasurer, Jean Shirk. Our girls formed a Girls' Chorus and we all took part in the various athletics and entertainments pre- sented by the school. The main event that took place our Freshman year was the weiner roast held at Cooper's Dam. It proved a great success even with the rain. We emerged from our Freshman Class with great hopes for the future. After a well spent vacation, we again entered Tuscarora Valley High School as Sophomores. This year we elected as our officers: President, Nelson Swartz; Secretary, Martha Yoder; Treasurer, Betty Meloy. The activities this year included our annual weiner roast at Cooper's Dam. Our boys and girls again took part in the various athletics and dramatic activities. This year we purchased our class rings. We were initiated to the rank of upper classmen at the Junior Prom. We all took our initiations happily with the thought of being Juniors next year. We again returned, less in number, but more in wisdom, as jolly Juniors. Our Junior executives were: President, Oscar Swartz Jr.; Secretary, Dorothy Boyer; Treasurer, Betty Meloy. This year we realized our rank as upper classmen and presented a play entitled The Angel Brats . As before, we showed our ability to fight in the fields of sports. Our class also started a school paper called The Tuscarora . The main social event was the Junior Prom held at the Community Hall to bid good-bye to the Seniors and initiate the Sophomores to become upper classmen. The Finals soon darkened the sky but as they passed over, we found ourselves Seniors. After a short vacation, we found ourselves back again as dignified Seniors. -20- At last our goal was in sight. Those chosen to guide us through our Senior year were: President, Benjamin Towsey; Secretary, Dorothy Boyer; Treasurer, Betty Meloy. This year our class presented a play entitled Hurricane House . Our class also showed its ability in the operetta Gypsy Troubadour and also in athletics The latter part of the year was spent in producing the yearbook, and in preparation for graduation.
