TI-IE BEGINNING . . . lt was approximately 0800 on the 19th of June onboard the USS TUSCALOOSA QLST-11872 when the announcement All visitors are requested to leave the ship at this time. was passed over the lMC. As we stood in formation, we saw our families and friends waving good-bye on the Pier, with tears in their eyes. By 0900, the TUSCALOOSA had sound- ed one prolonged blast indicating Under- way and the beginning of our ocean-going transit. With Sailors in Summer Dress Whites and Marines in Summer Service Charlies, we proudly Manned the Rails, taking one last long look at San Diego. We knew it would be six months before our return home. Some felt overwhelmed with excitement, anticipating the chance to visit foreign ports and the chance to learn of other cultures. But no one could ignore the feeling of sad- ness we all felt as we watched our families and loved ones we were leaving behind.
