, W USS TUSCALOOSA's keel was laid on 23 November, 1968 and she was launched 6 September 1969. She was commissioned on 24 October, 1970 at Long Beach Naval Shipyard in Long Beach, California. When fully loaded, her displacement is 8,300 tons, her crusing speed is 20 knots, and she carries two 3-inch 50 Caliber rapid fire twin mounts. During her more than 16 years of service TUSCALOOSA has made nine Western Pacific Deployments, and had an active role in the evacuation of South Vietnam. TUSCALOOSA has served in Amphibious Squadron SEVEN, FIVE, and ONE. She has been awarded Engineering and Combat Informa- tion Center E s. The Commanding Officer, together with the Ship's Officers and men, have the duty of making her ready for any service required by our nation in peace or war. Schlichting, Jr., was born in New Braunfels, Texas, where he graduated from South West 1 Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He received his commission in the Navy in June of 1969, through the Reserve Officer Candidate QROCQ program, after spending six years enlisted service in the Naval Reserve from high school through college. ln 1981 he obtained a Master's degree in Business iff Administration from National University in San Diego, California. 1 CDR Schlichting has served on six ships. His latest completed sea tour was that of Executive Officer onboard ' USS BRISTOL COUNTY QLST 11981 also in San Diego. His assignment prior to reporting to USS TUSCALOOSA was at the American Embassy, Nassua, Bahamas as the Naval Liaison Officer, and as the Department of Defense representative to the Bahamas. 1' Decorations worn by CDR Schlichting include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation I Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Medal, and Vietnam Service lt, Medal.
