Mr. William K. Moulten Berklee School of Music, B.M. Band; Chorus In the absence of a Music Department head, Mr. William Moulton capably took over the direction of the band and chorus. Mr. Moul- ton accepted this responsibility even though he also held a position on the junior high staff and music-minded students were grateful that their interest could be pursued without interruption. Miss Mery O ' Brien head of the Art De- partment, welcomed the assistance of Mrs. Georgiana Hall this past year. Through the use of paints, ink, pastels, paste, clay, cloth, and paper they gave the students a chance to ex- press their individual talents. In the relaxed atmosphere of the art room, the students exer- cised their imaginations to create their own personal masterpieces. Along with the usual sketches and paintings, they produced collages, and sculptures, and they dabbled in block print- ing, silk screening, and stenciling. The art ap- preciation classes also took advantage of the informal mood to view and discuss traditional and contemporary art forms. Their studies were aided not only by film strips and slides but also by evaluating the works of fellow students. Mr. Thomas Guilfoil Meehan American International College, A.B.; Springfield College U.S. History The Social Studies Department, headed by Mr. Thomas Meehan, includes United States History and Civics, United States Government, Ancient and Euro- pean History, Social Problems and Economics, and Problems of Democracy. This past year, Mrs. Judith Allen was welcomed as a member of the staff. Each division of the department recognizes the value of past and contemporary trends as the keys to the fu- ture. The U.S. History instructors have endeavored to acquaint students with the heritage of their country as well as to make the present more meaningful through an understanding of the past. The courses in the Problems of Democracy, U.S. Government and Social Problems and Economics found stimulus in the Presi- dential Election of 1968 which offered a basis for the study of government and history in the making. An- cient History classes have provided the foundation for all history studies. European History explored the government and philosophies of European cultures. The Social Studies Department has satisfied the need for an understanding of American society through the study of past generations, contemporary problems, and governmental procedures. It h as broadened the stu- dent’s outlook to include the past, the present and fu- ture. Home Economics In each department of TFHS innovations can be found, and the Industrial Arts and Home Economic Departments have been no excep- tion. This past year, the daring idea of ex- changing classes was put into effect. The stu- dents from shop enjoyed learning to bake brownies while they discovered the basics of cooking with Mrs. Patricia Lilley. They also studied other basic home economic subjects such as money management. The girls on the other hand, acquired the rudiments of wood working under the careful coaching of Mr. Richard Kossakoski. They made simple wood projects such as stools and boxes. Meanwhile regular courses were carried on each class. These extra projects were aimed at helping the non- college student prepare for the future.
