Science In keeping with the progressive spirit which was adopted this past year, the Science Department embarked on several new teaching inovations. In Biology, a series of film strips supple- menting the various discussion topics was used extensively. Each student was also given the opportunity to learn about the struc- ture of various species through laboratory disection. An Advanced Biology class was developed for students interested specifically in science. Although non-credit and only a half year in length, it proved to be beneficial to many students. Mr. Charles Galvin, de- partment head, expressed the hope that next year the Chemistry and Physic classes will receive a supply of new equipment which has already been ordered. Plans have also been made to replace the General Science course by a class on Health and Hygiene next year. The department was enlarged with the addition of Mr. John Di lorio. Mr. John A. To the expanding department, headed by Mr. Robert Avery, were added Mrs. Dorothy Richardson, Mrs. Judith Stockner and Mr. Paul Gigley. In various classes, work projects were set up to produce an office atmosphere. To help the students gain the complete feeling of an office, a secretarial pool was formed in Office Practice. Mr. Thomas Guilfoil Meehan American International College, A.B.; Springfield College U.S. History The Social Studies Department, headed by Mr. Thomas Meehan, includes United States History and Civics, United States Government, Ancient and Euro- pean History, Social Problems and Economics, and Problems of Democracy. This past year, Mrs. Judith Allen was welcomed as a member of the staff. Each division of the department recognizes the value of past and contemporary trends as the keys to the fu- ture. The U.S. History instructors have endeavored to acquaint students with the heritage of their country as well as to make the present more meaningful through an understanding of the past. The courses in the Problems of Democracy, U.S. Government and Social Problems and Economics found stimulus in the Presi- dential Election of 1968 which offered a basis for the study of government and history in the making. An- cient History classes have provided the foundation for all history studies. European History explored the government and philosophies of European cultures. The Social Studies Department has satisfied the need for an understanding of American society through the study of past generations, contemporary problems, and governmental procedures. It h as broadened the stu- dent’s outlook to include the past, the present and fu- ture.
