a dark stage - a curtain opening a maid, a beginning emerge - a family a family, unreal existing between performances confusion - more characters one butler, one prizefighter cheeks flushed - we ' re on our way The Cavendishes - a family struggling to keep together Fanny, the mother faded, spirited, dominant Julie, the daughter now - what her mother was once - in love - with someone apart someone who can never be Tony, the non-conforming son escaping - perpetually without fear, for life is short Gwen, Julie ' s child naive, magical the one who breaks apart Dean, the egotist Wolfe, the Cavendish organizer and Kitty, Marshall, Perry Miss Peake, the hallboys Gunga Makeup streaked with tears after the very first act the student director trying to keep calm to overcome we smiled, for we had roses to give her And the play continued in spite of ad libs - forgotten eggnog and each felt so close to each other We determined we played our hearts out - to that unknowing audience, and lived for their applause rejuvenated by a successful joke two nights looking toward the wings for acceptance, approval and then it was over the family - prevailing and we bowed, and gave flowers and cried and the stage was dark once again 24 and i assume a glow
