. . . You ain't heard what I come for yet. Did you tell him I come in a taxi? . . . Pickering, shall we ask this baggage to sit down, or shall we throw her out of the window? . . . My aunt died of influenza so they said, but it's my belief they done the old woman in. I want a little kindness. I know I'm a common ignorant girl, you a book-learned gentlemang but I'm not dirt under your feet. What I done-what I did was not for the dresses and the taxis, l did it be- cause we were pleasant together and I come-came-to care for you My Fair Lady is the story ofa young girl from the London streets, transformed into a lady of high societyg not without some difficul- ties. At first Professor Higgins wouldn't hear of instructing her in the ways of a lady, but finally gave in as a dare from Col. Pickering. Liza Doolittle's first appearance was at the races, in Mrs. Higgins' private box. Liza's speech and manners were perfect until she got carreid away and shocked Mrs. Higgins' friends. Careful Word-work by Prof. Higgins and Col. Pickering apologized for her slip. Months of drilling followed until the night of the Ball, when Liza passed as a Hungarian princess. Despite some difficulties, Liza and Professor Higgins live happily ever after, ending the play.
