For the past three years, the American Field Service has selected a student from a foreign country to attend school at Turner and share the differences of their culture with the students here. This year, Sri Sumestri, better known as Mestri to the Turner students, from Sourabaya, Indonesia, occupied this position. She lived with Mr, and Mrs. Ed Alvey, 1846 South 49th Street. Their three daughters, Carol, senior, Linda, jun- ior, and Janet, a 1961 graduate of Turner, were Mestri's American sisters. Mestri's subjects at Turner included: American history, American government, senior math, and speech. She was also active in Pep Club, and the bowling league.

Sally Ross received a three for her reading of winter. These students have gained some good experience due to hard work and effort. This past year the Turner High School Debate squad, represented the school in six invitational tournaments and the District tournament. Under the direction of Mr. L, A, Stafford, the squad made several fine showings and at the end of the season had won forty per cent of their rounds. The tournaments that the squad attended were held at: Washburn, Topeka West, William Christman, Bishop Meige, Wyandotte and Rosedale high schools. Turner was highly ranked repeat- edly during the season on personal speaker points. The earth stands on either side no bigger than the heart is wide.
