Q a-+wf'11,.ff? 1fffif i-ii Mrs.Thomas has found Turner to be a big school with a busy office. An important organization in every school is the Parent-Teacher Associa- tion. Turner's PTA is a very active group and does much to benefit the school. They sponsor concessions at football games, and try to bring a closer rela- tionship between teachers and parents through special programs.Monthly meetings are planned which feature occa- sional speakers, style shows by the clothing classes, and special music by the choir. This year the PTA presented scholarships to two seniors, Carol Alvey and Richard Andrews . 10 Be seated and someone will see you in a moment. This com- ment could have come from one of three very busy ladies who handle all the activity in the office including giving students permission to use the office phone. Mrs. Iona Carmichael who has been at Turner eleven years is very familiar to everyone. This is Mrs. Betty Higgins third year and the first year for Mrs. Ruth Thomas. Miss Peggy Jones is also new this year and she acts as Mr. Palmquist's private secretary as well as handling the activities fund. Other duties of these people include handling teacher and stu- dent attendance records, answer- ing telephone calls, lost and found, besides plenty of filing and typing. Counting money is one job Mrs. Carmichael doesn't mind too much, Taking time out from her busy day Mrs. Higgins smiles for a picture. Leaders Lend Service to School T. R. PALMQUIST Relatively speaking Turner High School is a young school, said Mr. T, R, Palmquist, principal of Turner High School, The first graduating class was in 1919, but during the first 20 years of the school there were only 200 graduates. Enrollment has grown from 200 in 1938 to over 1200 in 1963. In just the last year there were over 200 graduates. A graduate of Ottawa University, he served as principal of the Bluff City High School, and as superintendent of schools at Wellsville, Kansas. He was superintendent of Turner from 1938 until 1947 when he became principal. Just this past year he was saluted for his 25 year record of service to Turner High School. At the National Education Association convention this past summer he was elected to the Board of Directors. He will be one of two representatives from Kansas on the National Board. Mr. Palmquist has been active for the past six years on the Board of Directors of the state teachers' association, serving for three years as its chairman. He is activie in the United Fund and church work, also in the efforts of the Wyandotte County Guidance Center. Mr. Robert Wilkins has served Turner High School faithfully for twelve years. Starting in 1951 as an Industrial Arts teachers, he later became Vice-Principal. It takes a person with lots of ambition and interest to carry on a job of this rank. His work ranges from morning attendance work to that of handling disciplineg he also is in charge of enrollment and program plarming. Mr. Wilkins recently received the honor of being appointed chairman of the steering committee to help with curriculum planning and organizing for the new junior high schools which are to be built. This duty will be another of the many jobs to be done well. Being Vice-Principal is a continuous job which carries on into the summer months, After school is out, various tasks such as preparing schedules and balancing classes for the next year are begun. Each student is given special attention during the year and even after school is out to ensure him of a well-rounded education which is essential in this complex day and age. Mr. Wilkins has worked hard to help each studentat Turner receive the best possible oppor- tunity for a pleasant atmosphere in which to learn. He himself has received a Masters degree in secondary school administration and is in the Phi Delta Kappa which is an honorary fraternity. Assistance ls Always Available Mr. Bell is busy checking over Kardex files, charting each student's scores and grades. Three very important people to students at Turner are the guidance counselors. Among their many duties are enrollment, orientation activities for freshmen, col- lege programing, testing, and helping to solve individual problems. Mrs. Eisele is particularly concerned with helping students at Turner decide on colleges and helps to solve various problems that go with college plans. She has been at Turner four years and is a familiar friend to many students. Mr. Gene Bell has been counseling for ten years, eight of which have been spent at Turner. He is in charge of all testing programs, student records, and sponsoring Student Council. All Turner students comes to know Mr. Bell through the vocations classes he teaches the sopho- more year. Mr. Paul Welter is our newest counselor as this is he first year at Turner. Besides counseling he teaches Communications class to Seniors. Mr. Welter deals in homeroom guidance, and Senior graduation credits in particular. All students are welcome to visit these people for any problem. Mrs. Eisele helps students work out the many problems that come with planning for college. Mr. Welter helps seniors figure out the number of credits the need and helps Y plan their graduation.
