L .aa HISTORY or 'FHS . Turner High School was founded in 1915. The teacher was George Owens who assem- bled the group to form the new school that held first classes in one of the rooms in the old grade school. Besides those who were eligible to enter high school a commer- cial course was offered to those who weren't eligible because they hadn't enough train- ing from grade school. The classes that were somewhat like the present ones were held in one room with cur- tains as partitions. During this first year a meeting was called to discuss plans about building a shed for athletics. Basketball was the main sport and was played by both the girls and the boys on a dirt court on the school - grounds. Instead of obtaining a shed for athletics the community voted to issue bonds and erect a 520,000 building at the present site. The school was finished in the fall of 1916. It was a one story building and a basement. Sewing, home economics, and bookkeeping classes were held on the stage in the auditor- ium. There were eighteen members in the first class that attended Turner High School. Only seven of these , L J. PALMQUIST Superintendent Thru the history of our community run the threads of sacrifice and hard- ship interwoven with the gold thread of progress. From the first log school house to the present modern buildings, housing grade and high schools well-adapted to meet the needs of the youth of Turner, is a long and in- teresting story, a portion of which is portrayed in this volume. Just as out of the past has come the foundation for the advantages and achievements of the present, so the present generation must carefully plan and build a rich heritage for the future. It is my earnest wish as superin- tendent that the faculty and students ot Turner schools will together accept this challenge. r t Q . -a'-r Adam. sr:-.-..J21..T., and .-
