A U' ,.. .-4 4 .- Y ---W Lf'----L L .aa HISTORY or 'FHS . Turner High School was founded in 1915. The teacher was George Owens who assem- bled the group to form the new school that held first classes in one of the rooms in the old grade school. Besides those who were eligible to enter high school a commer- cial course was offered to those who weren't eligible because they hadn't enough train- ing from grade school. The classes that were somewhat like the present ones were held in one room with cur- tains as partitions. During this first year a meeting was called to discuss plans about building a shed for athletics. Basketball was the main sport and was played by both the girls and the boys on a dirt court on the school - grounds. Instead of obtaining a shed for athletics the community voted to issue bonds and erect a 520,000 building at the present site. The school was finished in the fall of 1916. It was a one story building and a basement. Sewing, home economics, and bookkeeping classes were held on the stage in the auditor- ium. There were eighteen members in the first class that attended Turner High School. Only seven of these , L J. PALMQUIST Superintendent Thru the history of our community run the threads of sacrifice and hard- ship interwoven with the gold thread of progress. From the first log school house to the present modern buildings, housing grade and high schools well-adapted to meet the needs of the youth of Turner, is a long and in- teresting story, a portion of which is portrayed in this volume. Just as out of the past has come the foundation for the advantages and achievements of the present, so the present generation must carefully plan and build a rich heritage for the future. It is my earnest wish as superin- tendent that the faculty and students ot Turner schools will together accept this challenge. r t Q . -a'-r Adam. sr:-.-..J21..T., and .- TURN ER If J ,ge 3. Houchin, Kirby Kear, Gaignat, Mercier, Leat, Jenkins, Haney, Mr. Osborn-coach. 54 Due to the lack of experience the Bears jumped off to a slow start in the '40-'41 basketball season. As the season progressed the team, consisting of five soph- omoros, three juniors, and two seniors, began to c!ick. Even though the schools on the schedule were all larger than Turner, many of them five or six times larger in enrollment, the Bears have won over half the games. The Bears boast a first place hold on the East Kansas League which Turner has held for three con- secutive years. They also are proud of their wins over De La Salle and Argentine. All of the team except Ackerman and Steele will return to make up a fine team next year. With five sophomores on the team it is easy to predict that in '43 Turner will place the best team on the court in the school's history. The call to mission work was heard and answered by two devoted brothers, Thomas and William Johnson. With this start the Shawnee Mission and the Kansas Mis- sion were established. By the treaty of 1825, the U. S. Government set aside for the Shawnee Indians a reservation of about 1,600,000 acres. The northeast corner of this tract now the Kaw and Missouri Rivers was covered with timber and the rest was prairie. By 1830 most of the tribe was living in the present Wyandotte County near Turner, Kansas, where the Shawnee prophet, Tensquatawa, a brother of the warrior, Tecumseh, had made his home. It was here that Rev. Johnson built the first log house in Kansas and established Shawnee Mission. Its membership grew until 1839 when it was moved three miles west of Westport, Missouri, or four miles south of Turner where the largest building, the Manual Labor School was completed in 1839. At the school the Indians were taught practical arts to enable them to earn their daily bread. The shops included tool shops, grist mill, brick yards and trade shops. The girls were taught how to spin, weave. cook, sew, and to keep house. The mission building was so large that the I . first territorial legislature convened f in it. Funds for its support dwindled in 1854 and ten years later it was .1 abandoned. During the civil war, ' ' activity was again begun around the mission and it was used as a barracks. Qi, Since that time it has been taken over 5' and kept in condition by a historical society. s,4J9'fJ 4' ' ' 'rs I THE KANSAS The Grinter homestead, a landmark on the slope north of the Kansas river west of Muncie, erected by Moses Grinter, the iirst permanent white settler in Wyandotte coun- ty. The old Grinter ferry which bore thous- ands over the Kansas river in the Oregon emigration and toward California during the days of '49, OF YESTERDAYE Trains of immigrants wagons coming from Westport would arrive on the south side of the Kansas river and the ferry, pro- pelled by cables stretched across the river and wound up on a windlass by a man at either end of the winch, would he made fast, planks laid, and as many wagons as could be accomodated, driven on. At Grinter Heights, at the top of the hill to the north, these wagon processions of gold seekers and empire builders disappeared thru the narrow pass leading to the west. In recent years the Sante Fe Railroad has been acquiring land from a point near Morris, Kansas, two miles west of Turner to the western limits of its yards at Argentine. About 55,000,000 has been spent for im- provements including the elevator. BARBER HOM EPLACE The old Barber Homestead is commonly known as the Lovelace Homestead. It was built by Merrick Barber a Pioneer settler. After his death his wife married Charles Lovelace, a widower, who was also a pioneer settler. He died in 1908 and she died two years later. The estate consisted of about 250 acres of Kaw River bottom land. She willed the land to the Turner Baptist Church which was located on 32 highway and Key road where Partonnar's filling station now stands. 1, . . , . r-7.3-:v 'r .- !-- ,.-.sf , . - ., 3 'I ,.., g -1-,4.,. l 5, in 3 2, -5 CH?
