Spring Fever I-IY all this indifference in school? What is it that is making the students slack up on their work? What epidemic is spread- ing through this school? Is it smallpox? No, I believe not g it must be spring fever. The students, souls are stirred by the songs of the birds and the beautiful appearance of nature. Nature is calling us from our books to the beautiful out-of-doors, and we are finding it hard to keep our resolution to study and keep up our scfhool standard. Everyone is thinking of picnics and wild flowers. We are appreciating the beauty of nature far more than we did a few weeks ago. Let us all enjoy the songs of the birds and the fragrance and beauty of wild flowers. Let us accept all the pleasure that spring can give usp but let us not forget our studies. Let's cross off the red marks. M. SWENSON, '23, Q3 . rg A Q, ' E' 4 18

The Wilsh of a Mortal NE day as I was walking along a path, not often frequented by people, I came to a bird of a strange species. It was wounded in some way for it was lying very still. Its bright fiercely shining eyes frightened me, yet I saw the bird was in distress and so I leaned over and found that its leg was broken. Using a twig as a splint with a handkerchief as a bandage, I reluctantly approached the bird and bound the leg. Then, my work finished, I stood up and waited for the bird to fly away, but instead, it suddenly turned into a man, majestic, shining. His radiance dazzled me, but I knew instinctively that it was Jupiter, the god of the heavens. I stood, silently trem- blingly, before his majesty. But Jupiter smiled at me benignly and said: Child of Pandoraj,-a faint shadow across his brow- I might have loved you 5 there were Io and Callisto-but the slant of your nose-however, as a virtuous god I am supposed to reward the worthy. Hence, I, Jupiter, god of the heavens, will grant you your wish. What? I gasped unbelievingly. Jupiter tore three hairs from his mighty crown and wove them dexterously together shaping them into a ring, which shone like bright gold in the sunlight. Here is my faith. What is your wish-riches, beauty, wisdom- but what has a maid to do with wisdom? I hesitated. Anything I wanted! I saw dazzling piles of gold heaped high around me. I saw my face transformed to the beauty of Juno, or even Venus-or even, perhaps, Mary Pickford. But I shook my head and said: Oh worthy Jupiter, I desire most-a sense of humor! Jupiter paled. His radiance dimmed. A sense of humor! When he had never possessed such a thing in all his endless existence! But how was I to know that. His face flamed with mortification. Wait! Here is my ring-No, wait! I will search the heavens- from every god I will demand it-wait! In a second he disappeared. For years I revisited that path. I waited patiently. He never came back. I often wonder if he is still searching and if that is the reason he has been gone so long from our world. As for my wish, well-I found it just around the corner. ADDIE BARRICKLOW, '24, 17
