His wife, Mercy, came from an old southern family and was used to many servants. The baby on her lap is a sea captain now. The long-legged boy with his hand on his mother's shoulder is Absalom. The girls are all married and have gone away from here. This is the oldest girl in the group picture. She was always nervous. One time she read a chapter of 'Border Warfarej the book she is holding, and couldn't sleep for a week. And here is Uncle Obadiah. He went to Congress. His son Isaac was a politician, too. Samuel, here, was a poet. His wife took in sewing. This is Sister Martha. She had nine yards of silk in that skirt. It would stand alone. Elisha, in that picture on the other side, was very proud and aristocratic. He never thought of walking to town. He had the best horses in the country. Melicent, his wife, was a Puritan through and through. I don't know what she would do if she could see the way some people behave nowdays. Here is another group. .The one standing, with his hand on the back of the chair is Eli Jordon, a friend of Cousin Hannah. She is the one with bangs. The man with his hand on the front of his coat is her brother, Nathaniel. He was the black sheep of the family. He ran away and went to sea. Nothing more was ever heard of him. This girl with the wide hat is Sister Ann. She trimmed that hat herself. And would you believe it, she wore it for three years. She always was very economical. Clementine, my cousin on my father's side, was very flighty when she was a girl. She finally ended up by marrying a widower with nine children. Oh! must you leave? Come again soon and I will show you the rest of the family. I have a fine picture of Uncle Ezekiel who once shook hands with Tom Thumb. And there is one of Cousin Timothy. He was a fine looking man although he did get his nose broken in a fight once. But I mustn't keep you with that story now. 'Tm sorry you can't stay longer. Goodbye. I shall look for another visit soon. VIRGINIA HOOKER, '21- 16 i I

barrier to our progress. Mind you we had scarcely a minute to spare in the first place. At last we are across the tracks or dead man's alley, and are on our way again. This strange sighttpassing down the street causes strangers to stop and wonder at the new kind of street car, although it attracts not a passing glance from the natives. At last by means of ai telescope we are able to discern that part of the school known as the new site. We arrive at 8:52 or thereafter and everybody scrambles into the office to obtain an admittance slip from our first vice-principal and dean of the Junior College. Such trips as the one I have just described occur hourly through- out the day, thus becoming what is known as a cyclical process. Such is the system of transfer between the old and the new sites which I firmly believe will be remedied before our great, great, greats enter this school. JAMES BROWN, '21, The Family Album N THE parlor table, i11 the center of the room, the family album occupies a prominent place. It is of read plush, with shiny brass clasps and the word Album printed across the cover. Between it and the table there is a knitted tidy. Around the album are grouped sea shells and other souvenirs, brought from foreign shores by the roaming members of the family. A The first picture is one of-but let us listen to Aunt Sarah as she portrays the family to a visitor: This first picture is one of Samantha Robinson. She was my great-aunt. There always was a cookie jar in her pantry and pepper- mints in her pocket. And this is Uncle Silas, Aunt Samantl1a's husband. He had the best blacksmith shop in the town in those days. Here is mother's cousin Prudenceg she married a missionary and went to China. Oh, that bald-headed man? He is Cousin Abner. He invented a rubless shoe polish, but it didn't sell very well. My Aunt Eliza often said that Great-Aunt Belinda worked herself to death. She worked from daylight to dark and then she never was through. Yes, that is Aunt Belinda. This baby is Uncle Ezra. Every one says he was such a sweet baby, but he became a terrible man. His children all left home as soon as they were of age. This group is Uncle Ezra's family. That is he with the whiskers. ' 15 -

The Wilsh of a Mortal NE day as I was walking along a path, not often frequented by people, I came to a bird of a strange species. It was wounded in some way for it was lying very still. Its bright fiercely shining eyes frightened me, yet I saw the bird was in distress and so I leaned over and found that its leg was broken. Using a twig as a splint with a handkerchief as a bandage, I reluctantly approached the bird and bound the leg. Then, my work finished, I stood up and waited for the bird to fly away, but instead, it suddenly turned into a man, majestic, shining. His radiance dazzled me, but I knew instinctively that it was Jupiter, the god of the heavens. I stood, silently trem- blingly, before his majesty. But Jupiter smiled at me benignly and said: Child of Pandoraj,-a faint shadow across his brow- I might have loved you 5 there were Io and Callisto-but the slant of your nose-however, as a virtuous god I am supposed to reward the worthy. Hence, I, Jupiter, god of the heavens, will grant you your wish. What? I gasped unbelievingly. Jupiter tore three hairs from his mighty crown and wove them dexterously together shaping them into a ring, which shone like bright gold in the sunlight. Here is my faith. What is your wish-riches, beauty, wisdom- but what has a maid to do with wisdom? I hesitated. Anything I wanted! I saw dazzling piles of gold heaped high around me. I saw my face transformed to the beauty of Juno, or even Venus-or even, perhaps, Mary Pickford. But I shook my head and said: Oh worthy Jupiter, I desire most-a sense of humor! Jupiter paled. His radiance dimmed. A sense of humor! When he had never possessed such a thing in all his endless existence! But how was I to know that. His face flamed with mortification. Wait! Here is my ring-No, wait! I will search the heavens- from every god I will demand it-wait! In a second he disappeared. For years I revisited that path. I waited patiently. He never came back. I often wonder if he is still searching and if that is the reason he has been gone so long from our world. As for my wish, well-I found it just around the corner. ADDIE BARRICKLOW, '24, 17
