They arrived at the ranch in time for a big dinner given in Dick's honor. When they entered the house Tad presented Dick to the rest of the family. All through the .evening Dick was very uncomfortable and troubled while Tad was smiling. What do you mean by this? asked Dick. Didn,t I come down here just to get away from girls and have a good time? Then, the first thing out steps a pretty brunette. Who is she? What's she doing here? stormed Dick. Tad was so full of laughter that he could hardly speak. She's my grandmother, he murmured, through bursts of laughter. Grandmother? Nonsense! ejaculated Dick. Yes, sir, that's just what she is, said Tad. She's only nineteen, she married my grandfather out of pity, just to take care of him. Well, sighed Dick, I guess I'll stay, in spite of the circum- stances. Dick's vacation went all too quickly. It was within two weeks of ending, just long enough for a-but never mind. About this time Tad went to town very early one day. Stopping at the postoffice he found a letter for him. It was a mere note, but that was sufficient. , Dick and grandmother were spending the rest of the vacation on their honeymoon. They had eloped, and the note was signed, 4'Your loving Grandmother. MAUD BRESSIE, '22, TGGCIIGFS ID you ever stop to think about teachers, just plain everyday teachers whom you meet in your class rooms? Every student, acknowledge or deny the fact, forms an estimate of his teachers the minute he meets them. By this I do not mean that he is plotting and planning to find the most reliable way to bluff her and still get away with creditable marks at the end of the term. I mean that the average student estimates the character or, in other Words, the soul of the teacher. Teachers can be grouped into three distinct classesg teachers that are machines, teachers that are human beings, and teachers that have a changeable soul. There are others with constantly changing souls. They cannot be included in these three classes because they n 12

No more parties or girls for me, 1,111 going to do just what I please? He glanced quickly around the room, then ' left for the station. A Dick had been asked to spend part of his vacation with his former roommate at college, Tad Roland. Tad had left college because of his gI'3,lldf3.th61',S death. It was hard for Tad to leave schoolvfduring the last week on account of the numerous banquets and dances given to the graduates, but now he was looking forward to Dick's coming, in the hope that this visit would bring much cheer. Tad met Dick at the train Thursday afternoon. .After the happy greetings were over they drove through the dusty lanes shaded by huge oak trees. 'Tm certainly going to enjoy myself down here, said Dick. You won't catch me doing this and that for any girl. I'm going- to have a rest from that kind of fun, he continued. Still no answer was received from Tad. I Dick turned slowly, scrutinizing his friend, Leaning closer, she noticed a twinkle in Tad's eyes. V A v Say, if you think that I'm going to pilot a girl around down here you are very much mistaken, Mr. Tad Roland, quietly said Dick. l'l1 just walk back to the station and take the first train homef' Don't get excited, Dick, retorted Tad. There aren't any women folks at this ranch but 1ny mother, he paused, and 1ny grand- mother. The last was added with a laugh. I guess that'1l be all right, said Dick, no danger there. ll

change from mood to mood very much as the grains of sand move back and forth in a vigorous wind. You have all met from time to time that lofty individual, the 1I13,Chi118.,, She goes about the world with a chronic disease which I will label a grouch, but others might call it only a soured disposi- tion. Her mind never goes any farther than the narrow walls of her school room. I think I could make a safe bet by saying that books and papers to correct are the only things that ever enter their narrow craniums at night when they slip away to the land of dreams. If a dream about a play or novel ever dared to enter her orderly and neat carded index fbrainsj, she would promptly doom it to an early death. You and I know that little Johnny Smith has a soul under his little freckled face and upturned nose, but Miss Machine most emphatic- ally does not. So she goes at her job of pounding knowledge into l1is little red haired majestyis head very much as if he were a gate post or other article that is useless but too good to throw away. Onward through life she goes, thinking that she is doing her duty toward mankind. Then there is the teacher with a blessed, soul-uplifting, human, good nature. This old world of ours is trying enough at times. What would we do without the good, happy-natured people to point out to us the silver linings of clouds? Even the greeting of a human being type of a teacher is different from the machine. The other day when you met Miss Machine on the street, did you feel all cold and chilly around your heart when she said, How-do-you-do, J ohnny, in that flat, colorless tone of an automatom? I'm sure you did, for that is the way I felt. Of course, when you met your teacher by the name of Miss Good-Nature, you were happier all the day for her simple smiling greeting, Hello, Johnny, what a dear little dog you have, or, Hello Mary, it's a beautiful morning, isnit it? Her greetings really give the impression that she is interested in her pupils and their interests. Children are like flowers, under good care they flourish and grow like magic but as the result of poor care there is only a sickly, drooping plant. Of course, Johnny's dog is only a mangy, flea-bitten pup such as people seem to delight in tin-canning and kicking, but in .Iohnny's eyes he is a wonderful creature and he is pleased to know that his teacher takes an interest in his affairs. To her the pupils in her class rooms are all possessors of souls, very different from each other to be sure, but nevertheless, they all have souls ready for the key of the teacher's heart. One touch of humor makes every one kin, and in the class room many times the teacher who possesses unfailing good humor spurs the flagging energy of her pupils and gives them new life. And last of all comes the teacher of the changeable soul. She is 13
